These schools will cost another limb for stuff like sports gear, travel etc. One of President Lungu’s aides, has 3 children there. Is this a perk that comes with the job as in govt pays the fees olo bafola zingati aba bantu?? (How much is their pay these people??) Nati nicheteko mulomo na envy.

dr-situmbeko-dcThe 27-year-old physician Dr Suwilanji Situmbeko who was reported missing on 10/21 in the U.S capital, Washington DC, has been located, local police announced on Wednesday.

The DC Metropolitan Police has thanked the public for their concern in the matter.

No further details were issued but it is believed Dr Situmbeko is in sound health and police is trying to ascertain the cause of his disappearance.

Dr Situmbeko was last seen in Washington DC on October 21, 2016. Since then, there was no clue about his whereabouts. Washington DC police issued an alert after he was reported missing.

Dr Situmbeko is attached to Global Health Corps. His online presence provided clues to his disappearance.

The Zambian doctor had made Facebook posts and twitter comments suggesting he was being racially abused.

Dr Situmbeko seemed to have experienced unpleasant and strained relationships with his roommates named Erica, Laura and Morgan who appeared to take umbrage with the fact that GHC fellows of color were being specifically chosen to attend media events, signaling that they believed that as white women, they were being discriminated against.

Dr Situmbeko was educated at University Mentouri de Constantine in Algeria on a Zambian scholarship. In April of 2015, he was selected as a Global Health Corps finalist for US12-Int: Global Program Associate, Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Out of an applicant pool of 5000, only 150 people would be selected and confirmed for the coveted associate positions and Dr Situmbeko made the final cut.

FAZ Match Ticket Scandal: Kazala, Siwale Allegedly Squander K150, 000 – State House Sources

Football HouseFAZ vice-president Richard Kazala and committee member Blackwell Siwale have allegedly squandered K150, 000 (K150 million old currency) which was part payment for ticket sales for the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier involving Chipolopolo and Nigeria played at Ndola Stadium.

According to State House sources, Kazala and Siwale collected K1, 650, 000 million (K1,650 billion old currency) but information that reached the source of the funds was that the duo remitted K1, 500, 000 (K1.5 billion old currency) for the tickets that enabled some fans access the match without paying.

President Edgar Lungu gave free entry to soccer fans to watch the match by purchasing nearly half of the tickets that were available on the market.

“You will recall that the tickets were being sold through the new system FAZ is try to implement, so when HE [His Excellency] offered free entry to soccer fans, he had to buy a huge chunk of tickets from FAZ outside the new system because it would not allow you bulk purchase. And FAZ also wanted to try out the Computicket System that’s how we had two options.

“FAZ officials were told to collect a payment from government, so when their agents arrived, it was the vice-president Mr Kazala and one committee member who collected the payment. In fact, they insisted on being paid cash because they said the association needed to attend to some logistical issues that weekend,” a highly placed source said.

The senior government official says Kazala and Siwale were queried as why they didn’t go to collect the payment with the FAZ accountant, but the duo claimed everyone at the secretariat was busy with the match and were already in Ndola.

“What shocked the boss is that after the payment was made, there was a query from FAZ about when the balance will be paid. So when we inquired what balance FAZ was asking for, we realised that the two guys that collected the money did not remit what they were given. That’s how come we have two different figures reflecting at the point of payment and FAZ accounts.

“The boss is very disappointed with the situation because his intention was in good faith but these guys are taking advantage it seems,” the source added.

Zambia Reports reached out to Kazala and Siwale but both are yet to respond to a query. FAZ general secretary Ponga Liwewe was also contacted regarding the irregularity but is yet to respond to a separate query.

When contacted, FAZ treasurer Rix Mweemba did not deny or confirm the discrepancy but requested clearance from FAZ president Andrew Kamanga to release details of the ticket sales for the Nigeria match including the alleged shortfall with regards to the money paid by State House.

“Thank you for your query. However I request your query to go through the FAZ President so that he can allow me to give details,” Mweemba wrote.

Zambia Reports has reached out to Kamanga on Mweemba’s authorization to comment and release the details of the ticket sales for the match against Nigeria.

He responded; “thanks, I will speak with him.”

Angola Seeks Smooth Exit For Kabila

congo-kabilaAngola said Wednesday that a date must be set for presidential elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo that will allow a smooth handover of power from President Joseph Kabila.

Angola and France will be leading a Security Council visit to the DR Congo next week to meet with Kabila, opposition leaders and civil society in a bid to ease tensions over the holding of the vote.

“I want the elections to be set, to be done orderly and then let someone else continue to run the country,” Angola’s Ambassador Ismael Gaspar Martins told reporters.

There have been growing fears that the DR Congo, one of Africa’s biggest and resource-rich countries, could descend into chaos after some 49 people were kill…

“I think that is doable,” said the ambassador.

Angola is an influential player in the DR Congo and a key backer of the Kinshasa government dating back to the two wars of the 1990s and early 2000s when Luanda provided crucial military support.

The 15 council envoys will visit Kinshasa, Goma and Beni from November 10 to 14 for meetings that the French ambassador said were an “important exercise in preventative diplomacy.”

They will also travel to Luanda to meet with President Jose Eduardo dos Santos.

There have been growing fears that the DR Congo, one of Africa’s biggest and resource-rich countries, could descend into chaos after some 49 people were killed in anti-Kabila demonstrations in September.

Last month, a political deal was reached between Kabila’s party, its allies and some smaller opposition groups to delay the presidential election — due to have been held this year — until April 2018.

But the main opposition Rassemblement (Gathering) coalition rejected it, branding it a ploy by Kabila to stay in power beyond the end of his term.

The Catholic Church, which has a strong voice in the country, has criticized the deal and called for more dialogue.

– A ‘good’ date for elections –

The Angolan envoy said the council can demand that a date be set for the vote but he stressed that this must be a “good date… so that we do not have elections and then confusion.”

Kabila, who has been in power since 2001, “should end his term and let someone else be elected, but he cannot sit aside and let the country in a vacuum do elections and stay stable,” added the ambassador.

“We want the Congolese to agree on something which is orderly, which guarantees stability in the country and we in the region should be able to support whatever is selected by the Congolese,” he said.

The UN envoy for the Great Lakes region, Said Djinnit, told the council on Wednesday that the government must reach out to the opposition that rejected the political deal to try to build an “inclusive process.”

During its visit, the council will talk to all sides to “ensure that they fully realize the responsibility that they have in preserving peace in the country,” said French Ambassador Francois Delattre.

Congolese politicians must show they are willing to compromise to prepare the elections as soon as possible, he added.

US Ambassador Samantha Power has said elections should be held in 2017.

The DR Congo has been ruled by Kabila since his father Laurent was assassinated in 2001.

Kabila was elected in 2006 to his first five-year term under a constitution that sets a two-term limit for presidents.

Opinion: Stop Presidential Term Limit Talk; No Need To Extend To 7 Years

pres-lungu-accBy Munshya Wa Munshya

The values of our democracy demand upon us to react against vile when it exhibits itself. The values of our democracy expect us to foresee evil ahead of time and retort against it before it manifests itself. Recently, there have been some calls among the ruling party cadres to request President Lungu to extend his rule to 7 years, or something to that effect.

Sometimes these requests do not seem to make sense at all. Some have interpreted them to mean that parliament must amend the constitution to extend presidential terms from 5 years to 7 years. Zambians have the freedom to express themselves and it is no wonder that a low ranking ruling party official can call the press to order and blurb any stuff.

But if some people have the freedom to call for an extension of terms, we all must exercise the same power to respond in kind to those machinations. There can never be anything more serious than to ensure that cadres hear it from all well-meaning Zambians: debates about eroding our constitutional liberties will not be allowed, it will not be tolerated. Not now, not ever. President Lungu received overwhelming mandates from the Zambian people: twice. This is a feat that very few people will ever meet.

Mr. Lungu’s election in both 2015 and 2016 shows the faith that Zambians have in this leader. But this leader must not allow people to deceive him into thinking that the past elections are a blank cheque for him to come up with all sorts of stories about extending the mandates. I appeal to the President to show direction in this matter and curtail all manner of debate that have the potential to inflame tensions. It is absolutely ridiculous for this head of state to think that Zambians would ever think of creating a wamuyaya in him. Zambians fought Kaunda’s dictatorship and they came together en masse to demand for democratic reform in 1991. What Zambians did in 1991, they did again in 2001 when cadres started advocating for a third term.

The same spirit of democracy among Zambians resident in them since 1964, is the same spirit they will use now and in future to fight ridiculous Patriotic Front supporters beginning to push for a third term or is it to push a 7-year extension of President Lungu’s tenure. Winning elections in Zambia is not a licence for confusion, it is instead a call to service, to do faithful service. It is not the time to begin grandiose plans that betray democracy and the rule of law.

Many people in Zambia wish they had even a day to rule Zambia. If a person has the opportunity to rule from 2015 to 2021, they had better be very grateful for all that free “manone” they are enjoying. Such a person should not give into the human temptation to overstay their welcome. Zambians are quite ruthless against dictatorships, and if this president begins showing undemocratic and dictatorial tendencies, Zambians will not take that sort of thing very kindly. That being said, I do trust the able leadership of President Lungu will see through senseless flattery and adhere to sound constitutional doctrines. President Lungu will do right to stop concentrating on what happens after 2021, and concentrate on what are the needs of the people in 2016, and the coming 2017.

We need to put our brains together to do all we can to reduce the price of petrol, to have enough maize, and reduce the trade deficit. Advocacy for senseless constitution changes takes so much energy such that there will be very little oomph left in President Lungu if he were to begin entertaining little men in the PF who want to show their strength by exaggerating the level of flattery. We must end here today and wish this great republic more peace, grace and harmony. To make it very clear: Zambians will not allow any manipulation of constitutional limits. Just in case you thought cadres will get away with this, well they won’t, and the Zambians stay awake to these realities.

Veep Wina On Corrupt Ministers

inonge-wina-veepVice President Inonge Wina says that President Edgar Lungu could not name corrupt ministers before investigations were concluded.

During the Vice President’s Question Time, Wina said instigative wings had been asked by President Lungu to verify the reports of corrupt ministers before he can fire anyone.

“The President did not mention any names, you cannot act on hearsay. The President has asked the investigative wings to ascertain which of his ministers are corrupt,” she said.

Wina said the ministers should not be demonized before the truth of their alleged corrupt activities is ascertained.

She also said that the issue The Post Newspapers liquidation was in court therefore restricting her latitude to comment.

Wina also denied that fuel was earmarked for another upward adjustment that would take it to K21 per litre.

She said the Minister of Energy had given the official position on the matter of fuel.

“I do not know where these figures were collected, maybe there is another minister of energy elsewhere in our country,” Wina said.

Anxiety has been building among the citizenry over unverified reports of a fuel increase.

Tribute To Marsha Moyo: A Light Dimmed; Dreams Obliterated, But A Voice Singing In The Grave

marsha-moyoTributes have started pouring in for Zambian singer and civil rights activits Marsha Moyo. Journalist Henry Kabwe, the former MISA Zambia, remembers his interaction with Marsha Moyo. Kabwe writes;

When I was a young journalist working for The Monitor newspaper (defunct), I was made to become an entertainment reporter after unleashing one entertainment story to the satisfaction of the editor, the late Goodson Machona. From then on, I had to work over weekends covering famous acts of music and art. Somehow, Marsha Moyo got my email address (most possibly from my column) and started sending me statements on her music exploits.

One day, she came to the office to see me. After being notified by the receptionist, I picked my notebook as I salivated for another good story from my good source. That was the first time we were meeting! She looked at me after greetings with a tone of disappointment. Amazed, I started wondering whether I had written something that offended her before she remarked, “I didn’t come here to give you a story; I came to see and thank you for covering me!’

Astonished and bewildered, I lowered the hand of a ready writer and took her around before we sat in the office of 10 people. Those of us that have never worked in newsrooms may not appreciate what it means to realise that your source respects you beyond the story. In that newsroom, Marsha and I talked about ourselves. We shared how proud we were of each others’ work. I was an untidy young reporter whose day was made.

When I moved on to have a short stint with the Voice of America (VoA), I was privileged to cover Marsha first. She deserved it!!! When my friend Susan Mwape tagged me in a comment where she had posted about her death and was acknowledging that I introduced her to the music sensation (a thing I had long forgotten), I reacted with sorrow. Marsha is gone – a light dimmed; dreams obliterated but at least voice that will keep singing in the grave! Go well my elder sister. You will be missed by the civil society, the UN and those who believe in human dignity and development. MHSRIP

Kamanga-Post FCFootball Association of Zambia president Andrew Kamanga has finally shown some bite by suspending his deputy Richard Kazala and committee member Blackwell Siwale for alleged gross misconduct.

Kazala and Siwale allegedly swindled FAZ out of K200, 000 money, after under declaring the money State House paid for tickets during the Zambia versus Nigeria match last month.

President Edgar Lungu forked out K1, 650, 000 cash for match tickets and the duo only remitted K1, 500, 000 to FAZ. Neither Kazala nor Siwale are authorized to carry out management duties on behalf of FAZ.

Kamanga cited Article 28 of the FAZ constitution to suspend the duo.

The FAZ president has been reaching out to his vice president and has given him freehand to be organizing chairperson for all international matches.

On Thursday, Zambia Reports revealed the match ticket scandal involving Kazala, a businessman based in Chingola. Kazala is also former deputy minister of sport.

muvi-tvs-njejePolice in Kasama have released MUVI TV journalist Njenje Chizu who was arrested for trying to cover the sealing and storming of Radio Mano by officers after word went round that opposition UPND president Hichilema and his deputy Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba were set to appear on a live program.

The journalists endured some ruthless beating at the hands of police. On his release, Chizu struggled to walk and was aided up on his feet.

UPND has condemned the beating of Chizu accusing President Edgar Lungu of trying to clamp down on the media.

“This is a clear indication of Media clampdown by Mr Edgar Lungu and PF. Since when did one had to go and get a permit in order to appear on a radio station? However this does not surprise us and nor should it surprise you because Mr Lungu is now deep rooted into dictatorship.

“As though that was not enough, the state Police went further and arrested a Muvi TV Journalist while others had to run for their lives after Police threatened to shoot and beat them just at radio Mano premises.

“This is a sorry story for the media and indeed individuals as it is now clear that Mr Lungu has designed a way that no one should say anything.

“We understand that this Journalist ( Njenje Chizu) and others were only doing their job but in turn police decided to arrest him with conduct likely to cause the breach of peace,” UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has stated.

Post Debt Estimated at Over K187 Million

post-liquidationpost-liquidation1Long standing press freedom giant, The Post, is being brought down to its knees with a possible end to an era of Fred M’membe’s vibrant initiative following debt revelation estimated at a staggering over K187 million.

Since 1990, The Post ha stood the test of political assault. It saw off President Kenneth Kaunda, President Frederick Chiluba, President Levy Patrick Mwanawasa, President, Rupiah Banda and President Michael Sata. It’s however clear The Post’s 26-year-old young journey comes to a premature end under the gentle giants President Edgar Lungu.

Founder M’membe’s greatest err will forever be his decision to swing into politics, meddling heavily with the instruments of power such that whichever President did not succumb to his whims became a political target of a suspicious corruption fight. Any President that headed to M’membe’s free hand to remotely tamper with the instruments was turned into a target.

M’membe was untouchable. He appointed judges, the speaker, diplomats, civil servants, ministers and enjoyed unfettered access to lucrative government contracts. He was Zambia’s Rupert Muddock. Not any more! They say every dog has its day. No one wants to celebrate M’membe’s misery. No one should enjoy the position one of Zambia’s most decorated press freedom fighter faces, but had he only borrowed from Lewis Ncube’s style of media influence as the Mail & Guardian (South Africa). That was never the case. The Post could have survived. It’s sad to now begin accepting an era without this press freedom flagship.

Remember, Zambians had so much goodwill they stood with the flamboyant corruption crusader. By the time President Lungu assumed office, many had read through M’membe’s motives and actions. He no longer commanded so much authority on a population whose opinion was now divided about his interest – corruption fight or business fight.

This is when the gentle giant President Lungu struck using some legitimate form – the court.

Claimants have come forth saying The Post in liquidation owes them millions (billions in old currency).

In a list of update by claimants and released by the Provisional Liquidator, Lewis Mosho, dated Sunday 6th November, 2016, it has been disclosed that The Post owes various institutions so far over K187 million.

*Investrust Bank* is owed *K7,952,015.79* in loans and overdrafts while *ZRA* is owed *K79,569,974.21* in unremitted taxes.
The Post also owes *K97,248,505.12* the *Development Bank of Zambia (DBZ)* a Zambian Airways loan it guaranteed.

The Post also owes *NAPSA*, *K3,087,308.05* in unremitted contributions.

And the Provisional Liquidator has written to the Inspector of General of Police to investigate and cause the confiscation of The Mast as it was an illegal rebranding of The Post now in liquidation.

“It has now come to my attention that unscrupulous people have rebranded The Post as The Mast and they currently publishing and marketing and constitutes infringement of The Post Newspapers”.

Recently Fred Mmembe is said to have registered a company called *Oracle Media* and registered The Mast as an alleged illegal rebirth of The Post.

Kalaba Fires TP Mazmebe To Africa’s Second Most Decorated Club After Confed Cup Display

kalaba-mazembe1Zambia international Rainford Kalaba scored twice as TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo beat Algeria’s Mouloudia Bejaia 4-1 at home on Sunday to win the African Confederation Cup for the first time.

Mazembe, who now have 10 continental titles becoming the second most decorated club after Al Ahly who have 19, made sure of the win having held their opponents to a 1-1 draw in Algeria in the first leg of the final last weekend.

They won the final 5-2 on aggregate, to add the Confederation Cup to their list of honours after winning the African Champions League in 2015.

On Sunday, Mazembe went ahead in Lubumbashi after just seven minutes through Merveille Bope who reacted quickest to a Jean Kasusula free- kick which hit the woodwork.

Zambia international Kalaba (pictured) hammered home a volley on the stroke of halftime to make it 2-0 and scored again just after the hour mark to put the result beyond the Algerians, appearing in their first continental cup final.

Bejaia scored a consolation goal in the 75th minute from Sofiane Khadir but the three-goal advantage was restored within 60 seconds by Jonathan Bolingi.

Mazembe were eliminated early in the defence of their African Champions League trophy this year and dropped down to the continent’s second tier club competition.

They will receive $660,000 following their Confederation Cup triumph with Bejaia receiving the runners-up prize of $462,000.

Mazembe will now play this year’s African Champions League winners, Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa, in the 2017 African Super Cup on the weekend on 17-19 February.

Opinion: Is Fred M’membe Bankrupt?

Fred-M’membeInformation coming from liquidators show that Fred Mmembe has been bankrupt for years, ruling Patriotic Front insiders state.

Institutions he owes huge amounts are reportedly all lining up at the liquidators to see what little money can be salvaged.

It has emerged that the rise and fall of newspaper owner Fred Mmembe will be faster than you can say the word swift.

Mmembe’s financial status is dire and is entangled in a mountain of debts and one cannot fathom how he survived this long without being declared bankrupt.

He has also allegedly mortgaged everything: his House on Nangwenya Road, his offices on Bwinjimfumu Road in Rhodespark, his printing presses in light industrial and all the deeds to the properties are held by Banks.

Mmembe is sitting on such a huge debt with banks, ZRA, NAPSA, DBZ that it will require a genius to survive this impending bankruptcy.

Until recently, Mmembe was deemed so powerful that he swayed public opinions on any matter including election of the President.

He therefore neglected to pay his tax obligations and borrowed from banks unaffordable loans to fund his expansion in digital, trucking and other businesses, which decision is now a prescription of his own downfall.

IT’S Time For ACC To Act; Kazala & Siwale Must Be Held Accountable

Kazala-KaluIf there is an opportunity the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has been relishing to respond to President Edgar Lungu for the body to step up its effort, this is the perfect and effortless moment. It needs no peculiar effort, but a few questions, how? why? and what?

For a long time now, the ACC has been branded moribund, inept and incompetent. But here is an opportunity to recover. They have been gifted with a straightforward prosecutable case. It’s time football should launder itself of any such characters as vice-president Richard Kazala and committee member Blackwell Siwale.

They’re hell bent on nothing, but destruction. It’s actually surprising that there are some club officials supporting Kazala and Siwale. They want to buy into the falsehoods being perpetrated by the duo.

Kazala and Siwale are claiming their suspension is as a result of their support for Kalusha Bwalya’s nomination to stand as a FIFA Council Member. How? What grounds has Kamanga got to suspend someone who is at variance with his opinion?

The issue here is a clear case of theft, crockery and abuse of authority. Kazala and Siwale transacted on behalf of FAZ. Unfortunately, they did not honour the transaction as per standard procedure and in the process benefitted in excess of K150, 000 (about K150 million old currency).

Ladies and gentleman, what can the money they have allegedly pocketed take care of. Look here, the referees are struggling with payments. Can’t we apportion those funds towards referees? How much revenue is this amount to lower league teams? How about pouring those funds into the training of coaches, administrators etc?

Andrew Kamanga’s decisive action to save public funds deserves every Zambian’s support. If that money can’t go to referees, coaches, administrators or youths, it can surely save some meaningful purpose elsewhere. In an era where the economy is biting, families going hungry, children dying from preventable diseases, Kazala and Siwale can’t be allowed to continue with this wanton destruction of public resources.

Clearly, this is not the first time FAZ officials are engaged in such excessive abuse of public funds. This is a cancerous problem requiring an end. It speaks volumes of how these guys have abused funds with impunity at Football House. It explains why 2012 Chipolopolo Africa Cup members got less money than officials for winning the Africa Cup. It explains why the SuperSport deal was such a ‘state secret’, it confirms why an association that has claimed to have surplus in its budget is heavily indebted. And Kamanga is seemingly alone in the battle to cleanse Football House. We doubt his general secretary Ponga Liwewe is with him. Ponga is displaying no capacity to bring order to the carcass that Football House has become.

The action by Kazala and Siwale puts to rest the many questions we have raised. It finally opens an avenue for the Anti Corruption Commission to sweep clean the dirty carpet at Football House. President Lungu issued a directive to those officers at Kulima Tower House not to just sit on their bums and enjoy coffee; it’s time to work. Put those brains to work gentlemen and ladies.

The Head of State means well. He is wholeheartedly supporting the national team and football in the country. Yet he is being let down by a bunch of greedy and selfish individuals whose sole aim is not to serve but cripple the country’s number one sport by lining their already fat pockets.

There is a big problem at Football House. Kamanga alone can’t succeed in cleansing the rot. He needs the help of a citizen that is ready to protect national resources. Where are those that have been calling for ministers to refund national coffers? Is the money channeled to football not part of proceeds from national coffers? Is the colour of money channeled to football different from that going to other sectors? If ministers and other civil servants can be investigated for stealing these funds, why not those at Football House?

Listen to Siwale defend himself, “Am deeply happy and delighted. I have achieved in getting the letter for King Kalu. Fought the battle and prepared to pay the price.” How stupid! What is the correlation between Kalusha’s nomination and the match ticket money you jointly collected with Kazala?

Okay, let us put it this way. Congratulations Mr Siwale on your tenacious fight to secure Kalusha the letter to contest the position at FIFA. You fought an excellent battle and we salute you sir. Well done! Now we also ask. How much did you get on behalf of FAZ? How much did you remit? Where is the difference? Need we go further Mr Siwale?

Kudos to President Lungu for demonstrating such passion towards a sport that unites Zambians across tribe and political opinion. We are just saddened that even before the ink of President’s Lungu’s directive to the ACC dries in the note books of journalists, Kazala and Siwale have shown their true colours. What else does the ACC need to move? Get up guys, there is already a prima facie here. Football House is littered with your clients!

Citizen’s View: ZRA Is Misguided On The Mast

the-mastIn view of the statement by the Zambia Revenue Authority that The Mast is not registered with them, I hope the institution is aware that The Mast is not the name of the company but the name of the product.

This newspaper is published by Oracle Media Productions Limited. There is a distinction between a product and the company and its not always the case that the product name carries the same name as the company.

For example, the National Mirror newspaper was a publication of Multimedia Zambia. Times of Zambia is a publication of Times Printpak (Zambia) Limited. Cocacola is a product of Zambia Bottlers. I further hope that Zambia Revenue Authority is aware that there is no law in Zambia that compels registration of a newspaper.

I can begin publishing a newspaper today and just avail a copy to National Archives of Zambia and State House without necessarily registering the publication. However, what would be expected of me is to remit taxes for the sales of the newspaper.
