Rainbow Party leader Wynter Kabimba says that he is keeping his fingers crossed over the Constitutional Court decision on the eligibility of President Edgar Lungu for the 2021 elections.

Kabimba said that the ruling by the Constitutional Court will give an indication on how the 2021 elections will pan out.

President Lungu has indicated that he will be on the ballot in the 2021 elections which will be his third time on the ballot.

The Head of State has said the only challenge will be whether the ruling party will find his candidature appealing for the polls.
Kabimba said that he was anxiously waiting for the Constitutional Court to make its ruling on the matter.

The debate on whether President Lungu will contest the 2021 elections has yet to be closed.

Fourth Revolution Party president Erick Chanda seems to have gone under in the aftermath of the August 11 2016 elections.

For a man who had become a perennial fixture in the news with his trademark cross or the Umusalaba as he loved to refer to it, his absence cannot go unnoticed.

The last we checked he was trekking to court over the defamation of the president case alongside The Post Newspapers in liquridation reporters.
Someone tell where comrade Erick Chanda is.

OPINION: Police Must Reflect on their Conduct

The Zambia police once again found itself in an embarrassing situation in their eagerness to impress on their political handlers.

Lusaka Province commanding officer Nelson Phiri commandeered an operation last Thursday to bar would be congregants at the Cathedral of Holy Cross planning to hold thanks giving prayers for the release of UPND president Hakainde Hichilema.

Commisioner Phiri unashamedly said that his officers were applying the requirements of the Public Order Act in stopping the prayers.

The scene of armed police officers turning away congregants made for a very comical scene if not for its seriousness.

While the police were all over town imagining their political handlers would be most pleased with them, they were rudely shocked that the one person they thought would come to their defence lambasted them. Minister of Religious Affairs and National Guidance Godfridah Sumaili said the police were out of order.

No apology was forthcoming from the police and State House drove the final nail in the police coffin by blasting the police branding them unprofessional. Now the police were left eating humble pie for their high handedness. Considering the number of cases that they have bungled with their arrest and then investigate style, they should deeply reflect on their conduct.

Look at how embarrassingly the Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja had to retreat in the Chilufya Tayali defamation case. Did not Obvious Mwaliteta and his colleagues endure one year behind bars only for the police to have given conflicting statements laced with false testimony. We cannot even begin to talk about other cases where the name of the President has been dragged in the mud. What of the Chawama reserve police officer Peter Habasimbi who had been dragged to court on the strength of false another case of confused testimony?

Sometimes it is not the politicians pushing the police to flout the law very law they are supposed to be upholding but they are so bent on impressing on politicians that they mess up. The police should just commit to acting professionally and spare the dignity of their profession. Otherwise there is no need for properly trained officers to be pandering to the whims of politicians. Police should just begin to learn that only being professional will earn them the respect of the citizenry.

Panic has hit some cabinet ministers following President Edgar Lungu’s holiday in Mfuwe.

A leaked document of purported reshuffles has sent panic waves with some officials allegedly sacked coming out of the woods to plead ignorance on the alleged sacking.

Foreign Affairs Minister Harry Kalaba and Zambia High Commissioner to South Africa Emmanuel Mwamba have come out fending off shadows.

President Lungu is expected back in Lusaka later today having had his retreat.

It is not clear whether the retreat is a precursor to major policy pronouncements or reshuffles.

Lusaka Dynamos winger Fwayo Tembo has turned down a call up to the national team ahead of Saturday’s Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier against Algeria.

Tembo was included in the squad as a compromise following an outcry from some fans but the journeyed midfielder whose disciplinary record remains a dent on his otherwise supreme talent has opted out of the match.

The former Etoile du Sahel, FC Basel, Giurgiu Astra and Power Dynamos player has had an unsettled career path.

Meanwhile 26 of the 32 players Nyirenda has summoned for the Algeria clash have reported to camp.

Skipper Kennedy Mweene, ball wizard Chisamba Lungu, FC Lifiering teenage star Enock ‘Computer’ Mwepu and South Africa based Roderick Kabwe joined a host of local players in a morning workout at Woodlands Stadium.

The rest of the foreign legion comprising Stoppilla Sunzu (Arsenal Tula-Russia), Emmanuel Banda (Ostende-Belgium), Patson Daka (Red bull Salzburg) and Fashion Sakala are expected by the end of Monday.

Zambia plays Algeria on Saturday at Heroes Stadium in the FIFA 2018 World Cup Group B qualifiers.

The two sides will play each other twice over two days with the second leg on September 5 in Constantine.

Mopani Acts on Job Cuts Threat

The first wave of imminent job cuts has hit Mopani Copper Mines with 300 miners sent back home.

Mopani has refused to budge over a dispute of increased electricity tariffs that other firms have embraced.

Over 300 miners working for contractors and suppliers have been put on indefinite leave.

Their access cards to the mining firm have been de-activated with no certainty on what will happen to them.

Mopani has threatened to lay off about 4, 700 miners if there is no resolution between the Copperbelt Energy Corporation, Zesco and Mopani over revised electricity tariffs.

The mining firm has said that if the revised tariffs are not reversed, the only option will be to send away more miners.

Mines minister Christopher Yaluma has been having fruitless meetings with Mopani and is due for another round that will be attended by his energy counterpart David Mabumba.

OPINION: Will the U-20 Romance Story Fashion a Win for Zambia?

For months now Chipolopolo coach Wedson Nyirenda has been bombarded with demands that he features U-20 stars in any of the high profile games the senior national team plays. Nyirenda has preached caution but no one has seriously rendered his misgivings about the fast track transition of the U-20 to the senior national team.

There has been whirlwind excitement about the almost infallible status that the U-20 attained in the aftermath of Africa Cup glory and FIFA U-20 World Cup quarterfinal feat. It is almost as if the lads are just supposed to just make an appearance on the pitch and there will be some form of magical transformation in the national team. Well that chance has come and knowing the fickle nature of the Zambian fans they could very easily boo those lads if they fail to perform.

Do not bet on the fans cheering when even the esteemed Fashion Sakala, Enock Mwepu and Patson Daka fall short of the big stage as the same fans could boo the lads. Few have been willing to heed the advice of having these teenage stars be under studied by senior players in the meantime but the mantra has been to throw them in the deep end of the swimming pool.

There could not have been a sterner test than the FIFA World Cup glory than against perennial continental flag bearers in Algeria. Any follower of the game will know that Algeria places a very high premium on World Cup qualification and hence raising the stakes in the back to back fixtures due on September 2 and 5.
Understandably the results at senior level have not been smooth but that should not have been the license to discard the bulk of the senior players.

While players like Collins Mbesuma, Jacob Mulenga and Isaac Chansa may not have any business leading the Chipolopolo attack they could still be roped in to provide some mentorship role. Was not Patson Daka’s national team career killed in its infancy after he was ‘rushed’ into the senior team with fans booing him?

While we are at the U-20 romance story let us be mindful of the limitations that may be natural to teenage stars pushed in a men’s game.
Good luck Zambia!

Journalist Queries FAZ Ban on Woodlands Stadium

With the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) banning the use of the newly refurbished Vodafone Woodlands Stadium journalist has punched holes in the decision.

Former Bulletin and Records Magazine editor Kingsley Kaswende has labeled the move short sighted and opened up a healthy debate among his followers.

FAZ has banned the use of Woodlands Stadium following cry baby antics by MTN Zambia that demands that no competitor should place any adverts in the perimeter of the facility as part of the sponsorship deal the Zambian game has with the mobile service provider.

Vodafone signed a multi million deal with City of Lusaka Football Club but their efforts to meet MTN halfway have been trashed.

FAZ moved a double header on Sunday that was scheduled for Woodlands Stadium following the dispute between MTN and Vodafone.

Below is Kaswende’s submission:

I think that the wrangle between MTN and Vodafone regarding the use of Vodafone (Woodlands) Stadium for the MTN-sponsored Super league games must be handled very carefully because it can potentially set a very bad precedent.

The Football Association of Zambia must show leadership and deal decisively with this issue. The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) must also take an interest in such issues.

Next we’ll hear that just because the league is sponsored by KCM, then First Quantum cannot brand Lumwana Radiants’ stadium, or that just because ZANACO FC is playing in the Barclays Cup, they can’t brand Sunset Stadium

Economic Freedom Fighters president Chilufya Tayali has staged a lone protest against Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja.

Tayali staged his walk bare-chested with only a pair of shorts on and was brandishing a placard demanding the resignation of the Inspector General of Police for alleged incompetence.

He walked from the Freedom Statue in Lusaka to police headquarters where he is due to register his grievances.

The Facebook happy social commentator applied for a permit from the police and was granted permission.

Tayali and Kanganja have been shadow boxing with the former having only recently discharged on a nolle prosequi for allegedly defaming the latter.

The opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema has arrived for church service organised as a thanksgiving session following his release from prison.

Hichilema’s thanksgiving service is finally being held after it was disrupted by the police last week.

The police gave the organizers of the prayer meeting a go ahead under the banner of City of Refugee Pentecostal church headed by Pastor Kangwa Chileshe.

The meeting is being held at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and marks the first high profile public appearance by Hichilema after the drive around on the day of his release from prison where he spent four months.

Last Thursday police blocked attendees of the prayer meeting on grounds that they had not satisfied conditions of the public order act but were overruled by Religious and National Guidance Minister Godfridah Sumaili.

Govt Should Stop BabySitting Mining Companies By Reintroducing Windfall Tax – Prince Ndoyi

$

Former ZANASU vice-president Prince Ndoyi has taken a swipe at government for treating mining companies with kids gloves.

Ndoyi says the government was baby sitting mining companies at the expense of the majority poor Zambians

The political commentator has challenged government to reintroduce windfall tax as an alternative for Zambians to benefit from their vast mineral wealth.

Ndoyi says the refusal by Mopani Mines to pay the revised electricity tariffs was unacceptable and immoral especially that poor Zambians are paying without protesting.

He said the crisis at Mopani is the first true test of Copperbelt Minister Bowman Lusambo’s leadership abilities.

“Government including some governments in the past have been babysitting these mining companies, treating them with kids gloves for far too long than we can no longer take. ITS TIME FOR WINDFALL TAX, the Copper prices are booming, conditions are ripe.

“We must never forget that, anywhere in the world, the wealth in the ground belongs to its citizen. Now that’s a bit mushy for a hard-nosed businessman, but that’s the reality and that’s where the expectations arise. If you may recall prior to the 2011 Election, late PF President Michael Sata a day before elections said that, “after tomorrow, you must say no to poverty, after tomorrow you must say no to unemployment, what we want is Zambia for Zambians, people are making money over our heads.” If these words remain true to the Patriotic Front government then we must strike while the rod is red hot.”

He noted that the mines have been abusing the relationship between them and government.

“Our relationship with the mines have proven to be abusive as it is a one sided friendship hell bent on exploiting us, even refusing to pay for electricity at competitive tariffs.

“These same mines were adequately consulted and now want to embarrass the government, a govt which has upwardly adjusted electricity tarrifs for an ordinary Zambian business owner. My view is as the prices of copper and other metals continue to boom on the world market, the country needs to benefit as well.” He said.

Ndoyi adds that the PF was put in office for the poor people and promised to deport abusive foreign investors.

“The Patriotic Front (PF) we all know, must put an end to this, they promised during elections to deport foreign investors that exploit their workforce, increasing corporate taxes and limiting foreign ownership of mines, and Zambians spoke clearly and loudly through the elections and they must reflect seriously on our concerns.

“Whilst we have made important macroeconomic gains, admittedly the standard of living of the majority of Zambians remains poor, hence we can’t entertain any job losses from the mines. Prior to privatisation of the mines, World Bank and IMF continued to preach to the Zambian Government that, in order to bring in investment, the country would have to make itself more attractive than its neighbours and competitors by developing an ‘investor-friendly’ regulatory regime.”

He accused the World Bank and the IMF of using the country’s dependence on the two institutions to pass laws that have weakened government control on the mines

“The World Bank and International Monetary Fund have used Zambia’s dependence on them for aid and debt relief to pass laws– principally the Investment Act and the Mining and Minerals Act, withdrawing many of the controls the state had previously established on the behaviour of companies.

“While significant investments have poured in since, it is far from clear that all investors have chosen to take note of those of the country’s laws that do still apply to them – or indeed to honour the commitments they make in the Development Agreements.

“Some investors have taken advantage of the fact that Zambian state institutions are too weak to effectively regulate their behaviour. The state itself also seems to have developed political relationships with certain mining houses that mean health and safety, labour, immigration and environmental regulations can be ignored with impunity, causing significant resentment for foreign investors.”

We Harbour No Bitterness – Hichilema Tells Congregants

UPND president Hakainde Hichilema says he has forgiven the people behind his four months incarceration on a charge of treason.

Addressing congregants at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross during a thanks giving prayer session for his release, Hichilema said that he had reflected on events that had happened to him and opted to forgive his persecutors.

The UPND leader said that his speech was on behalf of his colleagues that were arrested with him.

“To him that believes, all things are possible, therefore allow me to take this opportunity to say that a country that is divided against itself cannot stand. It is from this background that I urge all of us Zambians residents of this country to put our differences aside and focus on the common good of our great nation Zambia,” he said.

“I want to say to you on behalf of my colleagues, that despite the injustices, despite the inhuman treatment that we endured following our brutal arrest and detention we harbour no bitterness; we harbor no anger, because the Bible says if you are angry all the time, you will make mistakes so we harbour no hatred.”

He added: “I therefore say on behalf of our colleagues, I Hakainde Hichilema having reflected on everything that happened in light of the word of God and the love of our Lord Jesus Christ we do hereby forgive all of those…”

The church meeting was attended by several high profile personalities including the five people that were arrested with Hichilema.

‘Erratic’ Fwayo Back At Chipolopolo Camp

The Fwayo Tembo-Wedson Nyirenda soap opera has just updated itself with the Lusaka Dynamos midfielder making a last minute change of heart to join the Chipolopolo camp.

Tembo ironically became the last player to join camp after all the foreign based players summoned reported for duty.

The unsettled yet talented Tembo had initially turned down the call for national duty on grounds of having a frosty relationship with coach Wedson Nyirenda whose high premium on discipline does not sit well with the player.

Tembo got on the wrong side of the coach after having refused to travel for an international friendly match against South Africa after confirming his availability.

However, the player was left out of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) fixtures against South Africa that ended up in qualification.

Tembo’s backers rose up in arms demanding his inclusion for the September round of FIFA World Cup qualifiers with Nyirenda acceding to their demands.
The player however loudly turned down the call up but seems to have thought better with a change of heart.

Tembo has teamed up with his colleagues at the Chipolopolo camp at Golden Peacock in Lusaka.

Ukwa said the move was important in moving forward in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

He said that citizens should heed the calls and voluntarily be tested as a way of helping fighting the HIV/AIDS scourge.

This is the second time Ukwa is coming to Zambia for some performances after having been in the country in 2007.

The United Progressive Party has condemned the burning down of Kapalala Market in Ndola’s Masala Township.

UPP president Saviour Chishimba has also urged law enforcement agencies to conduct independent investigations on the matter and bring the perpetrators to book.

Below is the full statement:

THE TORCHING OF KAPALALA MARKET IN MASALA TOWNSHIP OF NDOLA IS EGREGIOUS AND INJURIOUS TO THE SUFFERING MARKETEERS

We, in the United Progressive People (UPP), are bewildered by the gutting of Kapalala Market in Masala Township of Ndola. Media reports on this development have left us unruffled.
It is unacceptable that destruction of private and public property through unexplained fires continues to ravage the livelihoods of poor marketeers who are already bearing the brunt of caring for their children and orphans at a time that the cost of living has sharply increased.

We stand with all the affected marketeers and share in their grief. Our love, prayers and thoughts are with them.
UPP appeals to central government to allocate supplementary funding to the Copperbelt Provincial Administration for emergency aid to affected families. Support for the rebuilding of the livelihoods of marketeers must also be rendered speedily.

As we have stated before on other similar fires, we urge the fire department and all the security wings of the state to put Zambia first and carry out independent investigations with a view to prosecuting perpetrators of these egregious acts. Should the cause of the inferno be found to be accidental, we urge all local authorities to invest in early fire detection technologies.

The peace, unity and stability that our nation has enjoyed since independence must be cherished and jealously preserved by all Zambians across the spectrum.
God bless our nation!

Coach Wedson Nyirenda has welcomed the headache of having to select the starting eleven for Saturday’s Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Algeria after a hundred percent turnout of players summoned to duty.

Nyirenda told Fazfootball.com at Nkoloma Stadium after the morning training session that competition in the team was very high.

“It is always a headache for the coach when you have a lot of good players, but it is our job to look at that. There are a lot of things that we look at. I think it will not be a big problem for us to pick the right team,” he said.

“We have a lot of competition, we have a wonderful group in camp. There is too much competition in the team. Everyone is looking forward to play.”

Chisamba Lungu and Donashano Malama were in the engine room while a strike partnership of Patson Daka and Brian Mwila was deployed.

For the other string there was Enock Mwepu and Kondwani Mtonga at the heart of midfield with Martin Phiri partnering Alex Ng’onga upfront.

Augstine Mulenga and Ernest Mbewe took the right and left wings.
