Letter: UPND Thanksgiving Celebration During National Mourning Was Bad Timing – Ndoyi

I would like to make an observation on what characterised yesterday’s two very contrasting events. On one hand a day of national mourning was declared and as a nation we held a Requiem Mass in honor of Dr. Kasonde, a fallen hero of our land. While on another hand a thanksgiving ceremony was held to celebrate the release of Hakainde Hichilema.

While the nation was mourning, HH and his UPND chose to hold a ceremony for themselves. What manner of of self centeredness? We know some of these people can’t wait to become Presidents but elections are in 2021 and between now and then people expect at the least minimum for us to be sensible.

Surely, as a young person how can we take the ideals of these leaders seriously, when the minimum we expect is their attendance to just show face. Atleast let’s put the interest of the nation first. These are same people who insistently refuse to attend national prayers. The timing was bad, they could have in the interest of the nation postponed it.

What message are we sending to the family of the deceased, even to the region where the deceased came from.

Also I am disappointed with EEP President Tayali as well, while the nation was mourning he was seen walking around half naked. Surely how can people take us serious as politicians when we can’t discern between making political mileage and moral cultural expectations.

In conclusion, I would like to end with a scripture from the Bible Ecclesiastes 7vs1-5, where it says, “a good name is better than fine perfume and the day of death is better than the day of birth. It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of every man; the living should take this to heart. Sorrow is better than laughter, because a sad face is good for the heart. The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of pleasure. It is better to heed a wise man’s rebuke than to listen to the song of fools.”

Hichilema says No Recognition for Pres. Lungu Until Petition is Heard

Opposition UPND president says that the issue of recognizing President Edgar Lungu cannot arise until the petition on the contested August 2016 elections is heard.

And South African opposition Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane said that his party does not associate with Hichilema because he is an opposition party president but because they share similar ideals.

Addressing a media briefing at the DA headquarters, Hichilema apologized to Maimane who was turned away at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport at the time the UPND president was in detention.

Hichilema said that the reason he had ended up in jail was because of the grievances he had over the August 2016 elections that President Edgar Lungu won.

“If your petition has not been heard, how can the issue of recognition arise? The petition was not heard, how can the issue of recognition arise? If someone wants recognition let the petition be heard. A coin has two sides,” he said.

Hichilema said that he was not afraid for his life as he was aware that raising matters on corruption did not sit well with the people that held power.

The UPND leader said that he was locked away in prison not because he committed a crime but that the authorities wanted to punish him for continuously disputing the outcome of the elections.

Hichilema thanked the DA and other personalities that kept his detention in the public light.

The UPND leader paid tribute to the international media for having extensively covered his detention.

He said that many of his supporters remained in various prisons across the country on alleged trumped up charges.

“We are not free just because we are out of jail, there are many of our supporters who remain in many prisons and are being arrested everyday on trumped up charges. These too need help,” he said.

Earlier Hichilema addressed DA members of parliament after they sought to understand his background.

And Maimane said that his party was building a network of political parties in the region that will be tied by their belief in constitutionalism.

“I do not stand in solidarity with Hichilema because he in opposition but our partnership stands for constitutionalism, rule of law and other freedoms that are constitutional. If you value these ideals it does not matter if you are in the opposition or outside,” he said.

Mwamba Says Hichilema Is Peddling Lies, “Judiciary Is Extremely Independent”

Zambia’s High Commissioner to South Africa Emmanuel Mwamba has accused opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema of spreading falsehoods on his current visit to that country.

Mwamba expressed shock Hichilema, recently released from four month incarceration, was spreading falsehoods on his current visit to South Africa.

“We are alarmed at the lies and falsehood peddled in South Africa against Zambia by the Opposition,” Mwamba states.

BELOW IS A STATEMENT BY EMMANUEL MWAMBA

PRESS STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE.

Pretoria – Thursday 31st August, 2017

The Zambian High Commission in South Africa has expressed concern at the utter lies and falsehood peddled against government by the Opposition members that are currently in South Africa.

During a joint press conference held by UPND leader, Hakainde Hichilema and Democratic Alliance leader, Mmusi Maimane in Capetown, various statements were carried live on SABC, were uttered.

The Zambian High Commission has stated that it was sad that a Zambia national could travel abroad and speak ill of the country, especially on remarks based on lies and falsehood.

Zambia’s High Commission to South Africa, His Excellency Emmanuel Mwamba said zambian nationals that travel abroad are expected to honour their solemn duty and responsibility to the country.

He described claims by the United Party for National Development (UPND) President Hakainde Hichilema that Zambia was facing a break down in the rule of law, Judiciary and that the outcome of elections remain disputed or contested as lies and based on total fabrications.

Mr. Mwamba said Mr. Hichilema’s release from Prison together with his co-accussed was a demonstration of Zambia’s entrenched rule of law and a tested democracy.

He said the recent court acquittals of Mr. Hichilema’s Vice President, Goeffrey Bwalya Mwamba and his senior member, Obvious Mwaliteta demonstrated that the judiciary was extremely independent.

Mr. Mwamba was reacting to various claims made by Mr. Hichilema at a joint press with the Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane held in Cape Town South Africa today.

He said that Mr. Hichilema’s claim that there was no media freedom in Zambia as lies as there was a diversified and independent media with over 85 Radio stations and 15 Television stations including 10 Newspaper firms operating freely in Zambia.

Mr Mwamba said the earlier in 2016 suspension of two radio stations and a TV station could therefore not be used to justify claims as the named stations were suspended and found liable for using and promoting hate speech.

On appeal and commitment to attend to the concerns the broadcast licenses were restored.

Mr. Mwamba further described Mr. Hichilema’s claims that the Zambian Parliament was raided by Police as a fabrication as no such incident has ever happened in Zambia.

He clarified that President Edgar Chagwa Lungu won last year’s election with a clear margin of over one hundred thousand votes representing a percentage of 50.35 after winning in seven of the 10 provinces of Zambia, contrary to Mr. Hichilema’s claim that he won by a mere 13,000 votes.

He further said the election of President Edgar Lungu in 2016 were pronounced and determined as credible by reputable local and international observers and the claims by Mr. Hichilema therefore remain unfounded.

Mr. Mwamba has since urged Mr. Hichilema to positively use his time in South Africa to help contribute towards Zambia’s development -and promote peace and unity than spreading falsehoods and tarnishing the image of the country.

He said Zambia was experiencing an economic boom with inflation rate at 6.5%, a stable exchange rate, a surplus crop harvest and a surging economic growth.

Bring Back Windfall Tax, Urges Opposition Leader

Movement for National Transformation (MNT) president Daniel Shimunza has called on government to seriously consider re-introducing windfall tax in view of the recent happenings in the mining sector.

Shimunza has also noted the need for the country to come up with a strong mining policy.

He has wondered why it had to take the head of the state to intervene to resolve the standoff between Mopani Copper Mines and Copperbelt Energy Corporation over new electricity tariffs.

Shimunza has however, commended Mopani Copper Mines and the Copperbelt Energy Corporation for reaching an agreement leading to the resumption of full power supply to the mine.

An Overview of the State of the Zambian Democracy

Since 1991, when Zambia replaced her long serving independence President, Kenneth Kaunda, the country has solidified its reputation as a growing African democracy. In particular, it has been known for its ability to change presidents via the ballot box. It has also been known for preventing presidents who wanted to overstay their constitutional mandate like did second President, Fredrick Chiluba, from doing so. The Zambian resistance against excesses by office holders has been remarkable for its robustness and yet unique, for the continent, for its non-violent nature.

All this has been brought into sharp relief by the country’s seeming regression into undemocratic practices in the 5 years that the current ruling Patriotic Front (PF) has been in office.

The PF was founded by Michael Sata in 2001 as a breakaway from the then ruling Movement for Multi Party Development (MMD). Sata had been the public face of the defeated attempt by President Chiluba to go for an unconstitutional third term. It is widely believed that Chiluba had promised Sata that, in return for his vociferous support for the third term bid, he would in time support him to take over the presidency. When Chiluba picked on a relative outsider, Levy Mwanawasa, to stand for the 2001 elections he was prevented from contesting, Sata left the MMD in a huff and set up the PF.

Sata proceeded to contest 3 consecutive presidential elections (including one bye election resulting from the death of President Mwanawasa.) He lost all three but grew his support base after each. In 2011, he finally took advantage of a veritable popular revolt against what was seen as the arrogance and corruption of the ruling MMD and was swept into office via a mini revolution similar to that of 1991.

It is worth noting that to grow his popularity and finally win power, Michael Sata and his PF took advantage of the democratic space that the MMD allowed in the country. In between elections, Sata was able to hold on-going political rallies and appear on radio and TV stations right across the country to sell his very populist message.

However, when the PF assumed office, the Sata administration proceeded to shrink that democratic space in ways that had not been foreseen, much less expected. It was a veritable act of climbing up a building using a ladder and then immediately removing it to ensure no one else can.

After President Sata died in September 2014, he was succeeded by the current President, Edgar Lungu, who won the closely contested bye-election in January 2015. He went on to win the scheduled election 18 months later – another closely run contest which was also unprecedentedly divisive and violent. In both elections, Edgar Lungu defeated his bitter rival Hakainde Hichilema of the United Party for Democratic Progress (UPND). A petition of the 2016 election result was thrown out on a technicality by the newly constituted Constitutional Court in a very consequential move that has left the country unable to determine whether or not the last elections were freely and fairly won by the current President.

It is under President Lungu’s presidency that the country has found itself in the international spot light for a stunningly rapid regression of its democratic principles, especially the upholding of a free press and citizen freedoms.

Exemplifying this worrying trend, are a number of worrying incidents that have occurred since President Lungu came to office in 2015. First is the closure of the Post, the largest independent newspaper in Zambia which opposition and civil society had largely depended on for coverage. The Post had become a vicious critic of the current administration (after having for a period lost its independent ethos by providing unquestioning support to the candidature and presidency of Michael Sata). The Post was closed ostensibly for protracted tax issues which it has to be said ail just about every media outlet in Zambia, especially the government owned ones.

As significant as the closing of the Post was the recent arrest of Opposition Leader, Hakainde Hichilema. He was arrested and charged with treason after an incident in which his motorcade failed to make way for the presidential convoy at a traditional ceremony. He was only released after the intervention of the local church and the Commonwealth. Dialogue between between Lungu and Hichilema has been mooted and is greatly anticipated by a nation very worried about the direction its politics are taking.

A threatened state of emergency has also been declared on the back of acts of arson which it has to be mentioned are yet to be proved to be the work of the opposition as claimed by the President. They were cited as the reason for the invocation of Article 31 of the Constitution which provides for the threatened state of emergency before any investigatory evidence was provided to the public. The public still awaits the connection.

This threatened state of emergency allows for arrest without warrant and detention for extended periods. Using the power therein, citizens have been arrested for expressing their views on social media under the colonial “defamation of the president” laws. Eleven people are awaiting trial for the arson incidents. They have been held for longer than a month and were reported to be on hunger strike (a claim that has not been confirmed). The extra powers accorded to the police under the threatened state of emergency are particularly concerning because the Police service have, even without emergency powers, been acting very much outside the law.

Since PF came to power, the police have routinely prevented opposition gatherings claiming they do not have the manpower to protect them. They then have arrived at the venues to prevent any possibility of rallies proceeding with more officers and show of force than would have been required to ensure a smooth event.

The police have also displayed a brutality in crowd control previously unknown in the country. Critical to note is that the police under PF, again routinely, fail to prevent or address extreme incidents of violence by the cadres of the ruling party. This no-need-to-fear-consequences has translated into a PF membership that is understood to be a law unto itself and feared by ordinary citizens. Cadres have been known to march in the street openly brandishing weaponry that was previously unknown to be in the hands of anyone who was not a violent criminal. On the other side of the political spectrum it seems the main opposition UPND has also adopted a violent ethos for its cadres claiming the need for self-defence. The result of violent cadre meeting violent cadre need not be set out.

The long and short of the situation in Zambia is that a country that was well on its way to instituting itself as a shining example of democracy in Africa, is taking longs strides backward. There is an urgent need to ensure that the democratic spaces, especially the free press and freedom of expression Zambians are accustomed to, are protected. It is also critical that citizens push back against government acts to take their democracy south. Citizens must, like they did to President Chiluba, say no to President Lungu.

It is after all because Zambians have been able express themselves freely that administration after administration has known not to dare overstay in power. It is also because of the democratic freedoms they have enjoyed for decades, that citizens have been able to use innovative ways of expressing their unhappiness such as the loud blowing of car horns at 17 hours every Friday together with wearing green ribbons that let President Chiluba know he could not stay in office when his 2nd term was over.

Zambia’s famed peace is because Zambians have been free to draw a line in the sand for those in power. If the Lungu administration is allowed to continue encroaching on citizen freedoms, that peace is at risk.

Antonio Mwanza: Lesson From Kenya

$
0
0

The nullification of Uhuru Kenyatta’s election by the Supreme Court of Kenya is a landmark decision that must be applauded by all those that believe in democracy and justice.

As a nation there are serious lessons we can draw from what has happened in Kenya.

1. The Kenyan judges have affirmed what we have always been saying, that elections are a PROCESS and NOT an EVENT thus the outcome of an election is usually affected by what happens in the pre-election phase and not necessarily what happens on the polling day. Rigging of an election must not be attributed to just what happens on the actual polling day but to everything that happens throughout the pre-election phase. For this reason, we must always advocate for levelling of the electoral field by ensuring among others equal, fair and balanced coverage of all political parties especially by the public media as demanded for in Article 50 of our Republican Constitution; fair application of the Public Order Act; Reviewing of the Republican Constitution as well as the Electoral Process Act No.35 of 2016 to strengthen the independence of the Electoral Commission of Zambia and improve its efficiency to ensure the delivery of free, fair and credible elections.

2. We must reform our Judiciary to root out political interference and corruption as far as judgments and delivery of justice is concerned. We must demand for clear separation of powers and the independence of our governance institutions such as the Judiciary, the Electoral Commission of Zambia, the Zambia Police and others. Equally, we must demand a review of the role and effectiveness of the Judicial Complaints Commission. In its current form, the Judicial Complaints Commission is a moribund institution that is serving the interests of the judges and not the interests of the public.

3. We need to steamline and devise a clear system in which a presidential election petition must be handled to avoid a miscarriage of justice through the abuse of technical legal jargons or lacunas in the Constitution. Further, we need to review our Republican Constitution to put a clear time frame within which election petitions in this case, parliamentary petitions must be disposed of. We have cases such as the cases of Ms. Nkandu Luo and Ms. Margaret Mwanakatwe whose seats have been nullified by the High Court yet they continue to operate as MPs because there is no time frame indicating clearly when these cases will be concluded. These cases may go on and on till 2021.

In conclusion, the nullification of Uhuru Kenyatta’s election has again put so called international elections observers in bad light. It is a reminder that you cannot sit in a plush hotel room in the capital city of a foreign state for two weeks or two days as an observer and claim that elections are free and fair without putting into serious consideration the happenings in the pre-election phase. That is an insult to the intelligence of the electorates.

Zambia coach Wedson Nyirenda this afternoon inspired 10-man Chipolopolo to a first World Cup win beating Algeria 3-1 in a Group B fixture played at Heroes stadium in Lusaka.

It is the first time Zambia has defeated Algeria in a World Cup qualifier. The win is also the first in three matches for Zambia.

Brian Mwila scored a brace with Mwepu sealing the victory in the final stages of the match that saw winger Fashion Sakala sent off for a second yellow.

Algeria’s Ibrahimi had earlier reduced the scoreline with a powerful drive that beat goalie Kennedy Mweene.

Chipolopolo: That Awkward Moment That Interferes With A Good Day

$

It was a good day at the office for Zambia’s Chipolopolo as they defeated Algeria 3-1 on Saturday. Congratulations FAZ and the boys for a fine performance.

The victory should have passed without any distraction. That awkward moment reappeared when the cameras zoomed in on Zambian defender Stophilla Sunzu.

Inscriptions on Sunzu’s jersey were dropping, literally. No one should seek to dilute that victory with anything else, but we have to face it. Mafro is a failed project.

The sooner we admit Mafro has ripped us off the better we can recover from this raw deal.

Let’s look at it this way. Zambia is 2012 Africa Cup champion, 2017 Africa U-20 champions and FIFA World Cup 2017 quarter finalists. The same Under-20 carry the COSAFA 2016 champions tag. Zambia is also Under-17 COSAFA champions (2017). Add 2017 COSAFA Senior Challenge runners up and 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) finalists. That’s not an average curriculum vitae.

And to end up with a kit supplier that is not ticking should worry us all. The Sunzu moment was nothing, but a very awkward moment with the potential to dent our image. It had nothing to do with the type of screen printing. A poor-quality outfit cannot be easily decorated.

Three months into the Mafro deal, the best the Singapore company could do for us is throw a jersey in our direction that make us look like a double orphan.

Coming to replicas, the streets of Zambia were littered with fong-kong.

There is no better moment to cash in on national team paraphernalia than when Chipolopolo is hosting such big matches.

With a game as huge a profile as Algeria in a World Cup qualifier, FAZ missed an opportunity to maximise on revenue.

Selling a minimum of 50, 000 (the capacity of Heroes) replica jerseys at K100 could easily have given FAZ at least K5 million revenue. We let it pass.

Congratulations to those genius entrepreneurs who littered Lusaka and other places with the unauthorised substitutes that helped us celebrate the win. It made us stand out in the absence of the ‘genuine’ replica.

MMD CEO Responds To PF Sponsored Attempts To Oust Mutati From Government

MMD National Secretary Raphael Nakacinda has advised members across the country to remain calm and disciplined in view of what transpired on Friday when the PF petitioned their Secretary General against Finance Minister Felix Mutati.

Nakacinda says those who have sponsored the group from Eastern Province who petitioned Davies Mwila to force Mutati to resign were oblivious to the current political dynamics in the country.

“I want to assure the members across the country in view of the propaganda and some petty politics today they need not panic. Let them remain calm. What ever issues have been raised as MMD we are a disciplined party and we believe in resolving issues using superior logic. We will not engage in the internal politics of the PF and whatever may have motivated them to behave the way they have behaved today.”

He called on members of his party to lead by example by ignoring what happened and demonstrate that they are a mature and disciplined party and show the nation that as a party they are more concerned with the development of the country as opposed to fighting one another.

“MMD is a disciplined party and let discipline rein and let’s show maturity and wisdom in dealing with the situation that has been raised.

“Your President Hon Felix Mutati was chosen on merit to be minister of finance and it was understood that he was President of a political party and it was appreciated that as MMD we in good faith supported the candidature of Edgar Lungu and moving forward ours is to continue working towards reorganizing the ourselves so that even when it comes to our value in this relationship it is enhanced.

“I think we will not be drawn or distracted by any attempt by people who seem not to appreciate the dynamics of the country political scenario in this country in view of the amended constitution,” he said.

Hired PF cadres were bused to the PF secretariat last week in a well sponsored plot to send a message to President Edgar Lungu that his purse man was not welcome in the ruling party.

Pres. Lungu Salutes Victorious Chipolopolo

President Edgar Lungu has saluted Zambia’s Chipolopolo for beating Algeria 3-1 in a World Cup qualifier at Heroes Stadium in Lusaka on Saturday.

President Lungu also congratulated FAZ president Andrew Kamanga and coach Wedson Nyirenda for their efforts in guiding the team to victory.

“As patron of Football Association of Zambia, I wish to congratulate the Zambia National team for a splendid performance which results to the 3-1 victory against Algeria National Team in the yesterday’s match played in Lusaka.

“I wish to further congratulate The President of FAZ and his entire bench for this victory. You worked hard to equip the team with all necessary skills.

“To the team, Keep up the good work and always remember to work together as a team. You’ve made us proud,” he says.

Meanwhile, The Zambia National Soccer Team has left for Algeria ahead of Tuesday’s Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup return leg qualifier against the Desert Foxes in Constantine.

Barely eight hours after having comprehensively defeated Algeria 3-1 at National Heroes Stadium before a sold out crowd, the team took a flight to Constantine.

Russia based striker Fashion Sakala has stayed behind after having been red carded in Saturday match against Algeria.

The team left aboard a chartered aircraft operated by Rwan Air six minutes after midnight and was expected to make a brief stopover in Kigali before heading to Constantine.

Sports Minister Moses Mawere, FAZ president Andrew Kamanga and hordes of supporters joined the team on the aircraft with the players bubbling with confidence.

The eight hour flight will see the team arrive in Constantine around 09:00 hours Zambian time.

Zambia revived its interest in World Cup qualifiers with their victory over the Desert Foxes to move to second position in Group B.

Nigeria tops the group on nine points with Zambia having four points while Cameroun is third with two points.

Govt Backpedals on Constitutional Amendments

Government is psyching Zambians over its delay to tweak with the constitution by announcing that the amendment bill will not be presented in parliament at the next sitting.

Justice Minister Given Lubinda said that his office had received too many submissions from the citizenry making it difficult to push through the bill in the next session.
Lubinda said that the delay may force government to revise the constitution in batches.

The newly amended constitution has opened some legal controversies with the running election dispute mired in constitutional ambiguity.
Lawyers and the citizenry are stuck with lack of clarity in many key clauses in the amended constitution.

“The volume of work I think I may not be able to present the constitutional amendment bill in parliament. I have received too many submissions that I think we may have to do it in batches,” he said.

Lubinda has previously promised that government would present the constitution of Zambia amended bill to refine some contentious clauses in the document.

OPINION: The Mutati Must Resign Calls Symptomatic of Bad Blood Between PF and MMD

$
0
0

The bad blood between the ruling Patriotic Front and their alliance partners the MMD faction led by Felix Mutati is not anything that should take anyone by surprise.

After all the vibe from within PF circles about being invaded by the MMD has been an on-going story. Expelled Roan Member of Parliament Chishimba Kambwili had become a symbol of the crusade to weed out MMD members from the PF that had been awarded top posts in the government.

Kambwili had raised dust about seeing Dora Siliya, Bowman Lusambo, Vincent Mwale, Mutati and Vitoria Kalima among others sit at the high table whilst founder members watch from the sidelines. It seems even with Kambwili out of the equation the resentment of some MMD senior members in PF circles still has disciples.

It is a highly uncomfortable relationship given how far the two parties come in election rivalry. It is an illusion for the MMD members to imagine their stay in the PF would always be smooth as there are many in the ruling party who feel they have been pushed away from the high table in preference for MMD members.

Mutati has only become a target but no one among the MMD members should imagine that the subject is just a one off sponsored protest. The innuendos will continue and may be expected to heighten with the sponsors of the voice of dissent shuffling their cards.

Mutati has proved an excellent choice for Finance Minister but it should not be forgotten that he still remains president of another faction of the MMD. There are those in the PF that feel he could be quietly gunning to challenge President Edgar Lungu should the slot be put up for competition ahead of the 2021 elections.

Mutati has not been discreet about his presidential ambitions and few in the know are not fooled about the options open to him. So rather than be dismissive about the Mutati must resign chants there is need to reflect on what kind of relationship the PF and MMD want to have with each other.

After the MMD die hards still wonder what will become of their party as they prepare for the 2021 elections. The other half led by Nevers Mumba has auctioned itself to the UPND while Mutati is in bed with the PF. The MMD should reflect deeply on what kind of relationship it wants to have with the PF.

PF Leaders Perceive Mutati As Stingy; He Is Too Strict With State Coffers

Finance minister Felix Mutati’s alleged stingy approach to ruling party request for funds from state coffers has won him very few friends.

Sources tell Zambia Reports Mutati has not been forthcoming to requests by some senior PF officials to allegedly abuse state funds.

The leader of the opposition MMD whose party helped PF win the 2016 general elections is more fixed on helping President Edgar Lungu repair a struggling economy.

However, PF leaders don’t appreciate Mutati’s approach and want him fired.

Yesterday, the PF took their demonstration to hound-out Mutati to Central Province.

The actions of the PF cadres are a well choreographed ploy by senior party officials who see Mutati as a hindrance to their organised corruption.

The move has been condemned by a number of stakeholders who feel the MMD President has managed to steer the country’s economy in the right direction and restored investor confidence.

Among the people who have condemned the PF is opposition All People’s Congress Party president Nason Msoni who has accused the ruling party’s officials of agitating the removal Mutati because of the impending IMF loan which is about to be made available.

Msoni noted that the elements in the regime have choreographed and hatched a scheme to take the minister out of the political equation ahead of the loan disbursement so that they can plunder the proceeds.

“The hullabaloo and organised movement of hired PF cadres marching with placards to hound-out a Minister unceremoniously has its genesis in the soon to be made available IMF loan in excess of 1.3 billion dollars. It is not about empty jostling for political power and repositioning but theft and diversion of the anticipated funds for personal use. That’s what this thing is all about.

“Those with insatiable political ambition for 2021 are gleefully anxious to divert that fund to contracts and contractors of interest. So the elements in the regime have choreographed and hatched a scheme to take the minister out of the political equation ahead of the loan disbursement,” notes the APC leader.

He described the actions of the PF as wicked and dirty saying the ruling party is tragically betraying its alliance partner.

Msoni said the calls for Mutati to join the PF is meant to ensure that he becomes “a bonifide thief” like them.

“It is wicked and playing dirty to go round using innocent souls to demonstrate for something they don’t even understand.
The alliance partner has been tragically betrayed by the shameless conduct of their PF colleagues.

“The question of loyalty does not arise and it’s neither here nor there. The choice at hand is you must join them and be a bonafide thief or you should resign.”

He also urged the former ruling party to ensure that it forges alliances with people who who value dignity and respect for others.

“Political alliances are not formed to service interests of the moment and later dumped unceremoniously. It is insubordination of the highest order for party functionaries to denounce and disgrace a dignified senior cabinet minister in government in the manner they’re going about.

“In future it should be prudent and wise for the former ruling party not to forge alliances of convenience with thugs. Always learn to identify and work with citizens who value dignity and respect for others,” he said.

The PF on Friday kicked off campaign to hound-out MMD president Felix Mutati who is saving as Finance Minister in the PF government.

President Lungu, until last night was in Swaziland, has stayed mute on the behaviour of his cadres sending mixed political messages.

Citizen’s View: Is Moses Mawere Minister Of Football?

I want to comment on a photo making rounds on social media, where Minister in charge of Youth & Sport Moses Mawere is seen having dinner in Algeria organised by the Algerian government for our National team and the entire delegation. Without taking anything away from his responsibility as Minister of Sports, but It is very sad to note that lately without regret our Minister of Youth & Sport has neglected the Youth aspect in his portfolio. It is almost synonymous that every time one hears the ministers name mentioned, it’s either he is heading a national football delegation outside the country or officiating at a soccer event. The minister has become a minister of recreation instead of playing the critical role of actualising President Lungu’s ambitious youth employment targets.

Notoriously, just over the weekend youths in his party were organised to protest against President Lungu’ appointment of Minister of Finance Felix Mutati whose also MMD president. This we thought would concern him but he still opted to travel to Algeria to watch soccer as usual. Instead of Youths been organised into personal development productive ventures of youth empowerment and youth skills development, they are being used into protests that are ill timed and retrogressive to the tremendous incremental gains the economy has made through the current Minister of Finance.

Election time is over, our loyalty must be to the nation and focusing on making our economic recovery a reality collectively. And youths must not be used to perpetuate lawlessness, instead youths should be used on issues of job creation, empowerment, skills development. Because unlike our leaders, we want jobs, we want empowerment, we want loans etc.

With the announcement of the budget presentation on 28th September alot is expected from the Minister of Youth & Sport on policy expectations especially budgetary submissions by the ministry of youth. We want to hear the expenditure projections in the coming year, unlike parading youths in protests. Worse off the Minister responsible running away from these minimum responsibilities.

I agree with Mr Mawere that Sports are a form of youth empowerment but the wider majority youths are not into sports. The Ministry of youth and sport must prudently engage us if they are to achieve any of those targets set on paper in real terms.

I want to urge our leaders, that they must take youth issues seriously and desist from using them. I am calling upon the Minister to change his approach towards youth issues. Youths as well must refuse to be dragged into petty politics but instead should ask the tough questions on real empowerment from their leaders.

I would prefer that this bar should be closed coz our young youths their lives are being destroyed. They open at 18hrs. It’s called Shonongo. It’s painted purple. They also call it Holefaya. When you drop off at Mandevu Bus Stop there is a dusty road, go straight you will find the unfinished building on your left. The bar is on your right side. You will just hear the noise.
