Marriage Age Debate Should Not Be Trivialised – Minister

$
0
0

Gender Minister Victoria Kalima says the revisiting the Marriage Act will not distort other pieces of legislation.

Kalima explains that there is nothing new about the law on marriage because a child can still get married at the age of 18 with consent from the parents and can still get married at the age of 21, with or without consent from the parents.

She says what her ministry is trying to do is to harmonize the same law, and ensure that it is not in conflict with other pieces of legislation such as the age when one is supposed to vote or obtain the Green National Registration Card.

She says the topic should therefore not be trivialized as it is aimed at ending child marriages.

Kalima says the move will also contribute towards the increase in numbers of educated women in the country rather than marrying them off at a tender age.

UPND Weighs On PF Demos To Oust Mutati

The opposition UPND has come to the defence of Finance Minister Felix Mutati saying PF cadres should not be allowed to demonstrate while the nation is under the Threatened State of Public Security.

UPND General Secretary Stephen Katuka noted the selective application of the Public Order Act as evidenced by demonstrations against Mutati.

Katuka states that PF demonstrations have continued to take centre stage at a time when the country was under the threatened State of Public Security where such activities are not allowed.

The UPND CEO wondered why the PF continue to abrogate the law with impunity while the law enforcers pay a blind eye to them.

“..But our interest is on the usual selective application of the Public Order Act in the country where PF members can easily get into the busy streets without a police “permit” and start demonstrating.

“Of interest equally is how these PF members are being allowed to demonstrate especially at a time when the country is under the State of Emergency where such activities are not allowed,” he said.

The opposition SG hopes Zambia Police will not stop other political parties from exercising their democratic rights including that of holding mobilization meetings.

“We therefore wish to commend the Zambia Police Service for this seemingly change of heart and professional conduct and hope that from now onwards, they will also allow the UPND members who wish to hold thanksgiving rallies on the release of their party leader Mr. Hichilema to do so according to the provisions of the Public Order Act.

“As a matter of fact, the UPND intends to hold several thanksgiving rallies across the country some that will be addressed by the UPND senior leadership that includes the UPND President Hakainde Hichilema and his Vice-President Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba (GBM).

“We believe that peaceful and lawful assemblies, demonstrations, meetings and rallies are part of the democratic tenets that must be allowed like the PF members have been doing against Finance Minister Felix Mutati of late,” he said.

Katuka is the latest to condemn the actions of the lawless behaviour of the PF cadres and the silence of the police service and party leadership.

Letter: Security Fears In Lusaka’s Makeni Villa Area

Hello good morning Zambian reports.

Am from Makeni Villa, and am concerned over the security of our area. There has been a rise of chamba smoking children commonly known as “junks”.

These people have put the lives of people in our area at a danger because they attack without mercy, and when reported to the police, they barely do anything.

We really need security in the area or ban the smoking of chamba.

Your publicity over this matter will be highly appreciated. Thank u.

Artist Behind Iris Kaingu’s Controversial Nude Painting Regrets Lack Of Art Appreciation Among Zambians

A Zambian artist Caleb Chisha has regretted the lack of art appreciation by Zambians.

Chisha, the man behind the nude painting of Iris Kaingu, says he received a lot of calls after the images went viral.

“[I] have received a thousand calls and messages from people [because] coz of this body art I did on Iris Kaingu.

“It’s unfortunate most Zambian people don’t understand what art is and the message behind this work I did…,” he writes.

Iris, once nabbed for producing pornographic material after a sex video was leaked during her days at ZCAS, posted images of her nude self dipped in leopard skin painting on the internet.

The images triggered debate with Zambians divided in opinion. Many condemned Iris, but others applauded what they said was her confidence.

In the images, Iris bears it all with her private parts covered in paint from her waistline done half way her thighs neatly curving to her right as if she was wearing a strap.

The daughter of former education minister has her voluminous two pieces of flesh on her chest choreographed in a hanging bra like cover of paint openly showing her anatomy.

Letter: The Mutati Factor In PF

Dear Editor,

MUTATI case is a two way play.

1. It could be that MUTATI is being haunted by His MMD faction in PF regalia. This is because the Minister is most hard working cabinet member, and his followers feel that he should be putting the same effort towards his MMD faction. Now, this could have given the PF member a chance to join the protest as they feel that, their party has been invaded by MMD MUTATI led faction.

2. The other one is from PF top officials. Owing to the fact that Kambwili is out, there might be Chao’s in PF on who takes over from edger lungu. Now, looking at the stats, many people in Zambia inclusive of UPND followers, have considered and given MUTATI a credit if not distinction on how he runs his sensitive office. This could have given officials in PF some sleepless night on what would happen if MUTATI joined the PF.

I think you can pick from that angle and we can discuss.

Kamanga Stakes Euro Camp for Chipolopolo

FAZ president Andrew Kamanga says the Chipolopolo boys may camp in Europe ahead of the must win October 7 Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup encounter against Nigeria.

Kamanga told Fazfootball.com that 2017 had so far been an exciting year on the soccer calendar with national teams across the stream delivering results.

“We have only got four weeks before the Nigeria game, so we are looking at options in terms of where we can camp the team and get the best value. As you know some of the players are already in Europe, they did not come with us they have gone back. We may see it fit to camp the team in Europe so that it is easier to prepare the team adequately and it is actually shorter to go into Europe from Nigeria,” Kamanga said.

The FAZ boss said that Zambia could draw motivation from being the only team in Group B that had never been to the World Cup.

“We are putting in every effort to make sure that this team is adequately prepared as we face Nigeria, which for me is the do or die game whoever wins that game will be assured of going to Russia 2018,” he said.
“But most interestingly in this group, we are the only ones who have never been to the World Cup, but with the favour we continue to draw on we should be able to qualify, come November because we have the advantage of playing Cameroun in the final round.”

He added: “So the must win game is Nigeria, and I think the team has demonstrated the capacity to win away from home. It was not an easy game, Algeria is a highly rated team, they have got a lot of skilful players and I think our team was up to the task and I think they put in a marvellous performance.”

He hailed the blend of experienced players from the 2012 Africa Cup winning side, local players that campaigned at the Cosafa and also the CHAN group and under-20 stars that gelled to see off Algeria over two legs.
“Hats off to the technical bench, we have had issues around player selection but now I think the coach was really spoilt for selection and I think we have now raised the level of competition for the senior national team because the players from the under-20 are also knocking,” he said.

“We have blended the team with players from the CHAN, Cosafa as well as those playing in Europe so it is a very good mix. There are players who are still there I think Stoppilla Sunzu, Chisamba Lungu and Kennedy Mweene who has done a fantastic job to take the younger ones under his wing.”
Kamanga said that 2017 was proving a successful year on the football calendar.

“This year has been a very exciting year looking at the results that we have achieved, starting with the U-20 who won the Africa Cup and went to compete at the World Cup where they finished in the quarter final. The senior team also finished second in the Cosafa, qualified to the CHAN and we had the U-17 finishing as Cosafa champions,” he said.

“The senior team in earnest has done very well in this stage of the World Cup qualifiers, we are just three points behind Nigeria with two games to go.

The Chipolopolo will be away in Uyo to table toppers Nigeria in a Group B encounter.
Nigeria has 10 points while second placed Zambia has seven points with Cameroun lying third with three points while Algeria are rock bottom with a point.

OPINION: Could Iris’ Porn Art be the Ultimate Mental Liberation or Sheer Stupidity?

$

Is there really a limit as to how far Iris Kaingu will go into courting controversy? Iris has become a symbol of rebelliousness against almost everything that Zambian society holds sacred. What has she not done to win over attention to herself?

Iris has featured in perhaps the most publicly viewed and identifiable porn act ever that relates to Zambia.

This is when her filmed sex act at the Zambia Centre for Accountancy (ZCAS) with a known male made its way in the public domain.

She was arrested and eventually found guilty of producing or distributing pornographic material.

Few may have thought that after that act Iris may have gone under to rehabilitate herself but the booty daughter of former Education Minister Michael Kaingu hardly gets enough of controversy and went bare before the brush depicting one of the most controversial pieces of nude art.

Not that most of the 14 million Zambians have not seem Iris’s nakedness before them, but the aspiring Choma Central Member of Parliament wanted them to have one more peek at her cookie lest they have forgotten how it looks.

Is Iris becoming a symbol of that one form of rebellion in our society? Should the public read too much into Iris’ pornographic exhibition? Is it the signs of time?

Did we not have police recently round up over 70 teenagers convening at some form of sex Olympics in Woodlands? Is there something that our society is missing?

Could it be that Iris is light years ahead of everyone in terms of mental liberation that the rest of our society can’t cope? Never mind the soggy boobs but Iris is at home with her body and does not mind shoving it before everybody as an act of her ultimate self-liberation.

Do not great acts get lasting recognition through controversy? Does not everyone remember the Mona Lisa for controversy that it stirred?

But then Iris could just have been a badly brought up child with an attention seeking complex.

Maybe society is taking Iris too seriously but one can bet that we have not heard the ‘lust’ of Iris.

Wonder what the next update on her rich ‘chitako’ CV will be?

Fire Davies Mwila Instead, Send Him To Cambodia – Ngwale

$

A senior citizen Elijah Ngwale has described the anti-Felix Mutati protests engineered by some senior Patriotic Front officials as shameless.

Senior PF officials are sponsoring cadres to mount pressure on President Edgar Lungu to sack Mutati from the position of Finance Minister.

Contributing to Thursday’s edition of UNZA Radio’s the Lusaka Star radio program, Ngwale said the actions of the PF cadres were tantamount to economic sabotage.

He said he was one of the people who was initially opposed the appointment of Felix Mutati as Finance Minister but that he had no issue with the minister now because he has performed beyond expectations and turned around the country’s economy.

“These acts are tantamount to and in conformity with espionage and economic sabotage, it is political savagery of its worst kind.

“I was against the decision made by President Edgar Lungu to appoint MMD president Felix Mutati, I even wrote a letter to President Lungu at State House elaborating why I opposed it. Not because Felix Mutati was my enemy, actually he is my very good friend instead,” he said

Ngwale added that President Lungu should be proud that he appointed Mutati because the man has delivered.

He urged the President to instead fire PF Secretary General Davis Mwila and send him in diplomatic service, preferably Cambodia.

“President Lungu should be proud he appointed this guy. Felix Mutati has proven me wrong on all counts, the guy has delivered, the guy has changed the face of our economy in less than a year.

“The one who must be fired is the Secretary General Davies Mwila himself, in fact let him be shown the exit door, reorient him and post him into diplomatic service, throw him as far as Cambodia,” he said.

Other callers who included Mr Kazia from Kanyama Compound, a known UPND sympathiser, agreed with Ngwale that the country’s economy was doing fine under the stewardship of Mutati.

Featuring on the program was MMD Die Hard Youths National Coordinator Gerald Chiluba and Prince Ndoyi who noted that the reasons the PF cadres were giving for Mutati to be dropped were too petty and should be ignored with the contempt they deserve.

Chiluba said how can the nshima cooked at the MMD Secretariat be an issue that should take mature people to the streets to protest against a national leader.

He noted that reasons such as the one some PF youths are crying over that Mutati doesn’t give them audience did not hold water because the minister was a minister for Zambia and not a PF treasurer.

Antonio Mwanza Queries Speaker Matibini Over $200 Million Loan

$
0
0

Speaker Patrick Matibini must explain to the Zambian people whether or not Parliament authorised the contraction of the latest loan of $200 million by the PF Government from the World Bank in accordance with the Constitution.

Articles 63 and 207 of the Constitution of the Republic of Zambia clearly states that Government can not contract any loan or debt without the express approval of the National Assembly. And in line with these provisions of the law, we as a Party beseech Mr. Matibini to provide proof to the nation showing when the National Assembly approved the contraction of the said loan.

The PF is killing the future of our children with the enormous debt burden and the general mismanagement of the country’s economy. What is worrying about this whole thing is not just the ballooning debt levels we are witnessing but the imprudent use of the debt money, unbelievable fiscal indiscipline and the sheer incompetence of the government to effectively manage the economy, eradicate poverty, create decent jobs and business opportunities for our people, especially the women and youths.

This Government cannot account for the huge debt that they have accrued since coming io office in 2011. It is clear that the bulk of the debt money has been squandered through corruption, over-pricing of projects, plain theft and sheer incompetence on the part of the state to effectively and efficiently apply national resources to the productive sectors of our economy in order to spur growth and deal with the excruciating and dehumanising levels of poverty and destitution among our people.

The full ramifications of the debt-trap the PF has plunged this country into are yet to be felt since most of these debts have not yet matured. The impact of these debts will be devastating as government shall be forced to cut down on social and economic expenditure to finance the debt most of which was contracted at very high interest rates.

And if the long-term fiscal challenges remain unaddressed, our economic environment will weaken further as confidence will continue to suffer, access to capital will continue to shrink, the interest costs will continue crowding out key investments in our future, leading to conditions for growth to deteriorate, hence putting our nation at greater risk of economic crisis. If our long-term fiscal imbalance is not addressed, our future economy will be diminished, with fewer economic opportunities for individuals and families, and less fiscal flexibility to respond to future crises.

The following summarizes several of the negative ramifications of our growing debt:

Reduced Public Investment. As the national debt increases, the government will spend more of its budget on interest costs, increasingly crowding out public investments. And the more that resources are diverted to interest payments, the less that will be available for the government to invest in areas such as education, agriculture, energy, processing and manufacturing that are important to economic growth. This will eventually lead to more joblessness, more energy deficits, more youths forced out of the education system owing to high tuition fees, more sick children due to malnutrition, high mortality rates and generally high poverty levels across the country. Reduced government expenditure in key economic areas is stifling innovation and slowing the advancement of new breakthroughs that could improve our lives.

Investors are beginning to doubt the government’s ability to repay debt and could demand even higher interest rates, further raising the cost of borrowing for businesses and households. Over time, lower confidence and reduced investment would slow the growth of productivity and wages of our workers.

Growing long-term debt also has a direct, real world effect on the economic opportunities available to every Zambian.

In short, the PF has mortgaged our country to shylocks due to incompetence, theft of public resources, corruption and general mismanagement of our country’s economy. Mutatinomics is not working and Zambians must brace themselves for harder economic times.

As the economy continue to slide and people’s lives become harder, the PF will resort to more oppressive tactics to silence the opposition, dissenting voices, the church as well as independent media in order to stifle debate and send terror in citizens, gagging them from voicing their discontent at regime that has failed to manage our country’s economy.

FAZ Abandons Bogus Kit Supplier Mafro

FAZ has announced it is terminating the contract with kit supplier Mafro.

Mafro, a Singaporean firm, has embarrassingly failed to honour its pledge to dress the national team and meet other obligations.

The pretence by the Football Association of Zambia around the Mafro shirt deal came to an end with the contract terminated.

Since the launch of the deal with the Singapore based firm in May, FAZ has been putting up a false sense of serenity when the deal has proved mediocre with national teams not properly kitted.

In June there was a deal signed for supply of replica jerseys but to date nothing has been delivered.

BELOW IS THE ANNOUNCEMENT

FAZ TERMINATES MAFRO DEAL

Football Association of Zambia
PRESS STATEMENT (For Immediate Release)
Football House, Lusaka
8th September, 2017

FAZ terminates MAFRO deal

Following the agreement between the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) and kit supplier MAFRO signed in 2017, FAZ wishes to announce a review of the partnership
The contract between FAZ and MAFRO was based on the premise that either parties would meet their obligations to the other.

Despite agreement for the provision of playing kit and replica jerseys, MAFRO has only partially fulfilled its obligation with regard to playing kit and similarly not been able to meet their delivery schedule for replica kits.

MAFRO is therefore in breach of contract by their failure to meet these and several other conditions set out.
These matters have been brought to their attention and they have been given several opportunities to redress the situation to no avail.

In view of the current status, FAZ has begun discussions with other potential partners.
This decision by FAZ to discontinue the partnership with MAFRO will be followed by a claim for loss of business due to MAFRO’s inability to adhere to the contract and FAZ will be seeking legal redress.

Mumba Yachi Shipped Back to Prison on Bail Technicality

Popular musician Mumba Yachi’s dream of a quick way out of prison suffered a setback after his bail application was frozen pending his acquiring a temporal work permit.

Yachi, whose real name is Shadreck Mukenge is facing a charge of making false representation to obtain a passport, illegal stay in Zambia and also giving false information to obtain a National Registration Card.

When the matter came up today, Magistrate Ruth Kapulo said that even if she gave Yachi bail he would immediately be arrested by immigration officers as his stay in the country was the crux of his court matter.

Yachi will remain in custody until his lawyers secure a temporal work permit for him.

Magistrate Kapulo explained that since the first charge hinges on unlawful stay in Zambia, Yachi could be arrested again if walks out of court without the said permit until the matter is disposed of.

Yachi is being represented by Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) vice president Eddie Mwitwa.

Pres. Lungu Launches Lusaka-Ndola Dual Carriageway

PRESIDENT Edgar Chagwa Lungu today attended the grand ground breaking ceremony of Lusaka- Ndola Dual Carriageway Project.

The 1.2 billion dollar project expected to be completed in the next 48 months will stand as a legacy project for the Patriotic Front government.

The Lusaka -Ndola carriageway is the atery of Zambia’s economic development as it opens to the mining hub as well as connects Zambia to the SADC region and COMESA.

Officiating at this auspicious event, President Lungu reiterated that his role now was to fulfil his campaign promises and not talk.

He added that time for this generation to create a history of its own and leave behind a legacy like our fathers did.

“President Chairman Mao and President Kenneth Kaunda left the TAZARA a legacy and now its time this generation created its own history President JinPing and Edgar Lungu will leave the dual carriageway,” President Lungu said.

He noted that the dual carriageway was not only a wealth seeking investment but also a life-saving venture by guaranteeing road safety.

Meanwhile, President Lungu has asked the contractor China Jiangxi Corporation to enusure that local Zambian firms comprising small and medium scale contractors are engaged on the project as sub- contractors in line with the 20 percent sub- contracting policy.

The head of state has also asked the contractor to ensure that the 3000 jobs to be created will be given to residents within the area where the road construction is being undertaken.

A Stateless Statesman: The Plight Of Mumba Yachi

$

Local singer Mumba Yachi’s predicament continues to win him more friends than foes. Whatever the case is with the Zambia immigration authorities, a talented young artiste in the form of Mumba Yachi does not deserve the punishment he is enduring.

A good number of Lebanese businessmen and women, Indians and Somalians are roaming the streets of Zambia masquerading as Zambians. They have never received the type of punishment Mumba Yachi is subjected to. This is all because they have enough resources to bribe immigration officers.

By saying so, we are not promoting lawlessness. We are only calling on authorities to be fair and justice in handling Mumba Yachi’s case.

Mumba Yachi cannot even be granted bail. How? The magistrate claims he will be re-arrested. This is total rubbish!

The court can issue lawful instructions to the immigration not to re-arrest Mumba Yachi until the matter is disposed off.

This is why apart from parliament, the Supreme Court, which of course receives matters from subordinate courts is one of our democratic institutions that can make laws. And we see no reason why a subordinate court cannot issue a waiver in a matter that clearly is not in public interest.

If Mumba Yachi was of Indian origin or some Lebanese that had enough money to bribe the system, his 2-year-old daughter would not suffer the psychological torture of missing her first love – her father. This is the worst form of treatment you can subject a poor human being to who is only trying to survive using his God given talent.

It’s morally wrong and legally incomprehensible that Mumba Yachi should suffer in this manner. The case he faces is very flimsy and most of such cases have gone against the immigration thereby costing taxpayers millions in unnecessary litigation.

If Mumba Yachi has some traces of Congolese in him, it does not mean he is Congolese. The geographical location of Zambia is what has made most of its inhabitants connect to other tribes from Angola, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Namibia, the DRC and Botswana.

The Lambas, Ushis, Lalas, Kaondes, Lundas from Luapula and Lundas from North Western have relatives across the border. This is not a secret. For instance the senior most Chief of the Lunda in Zambia is Mwata Yav who is based in some place called Kapanga in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

We join those that are calling on authorities to demand Mumba Yachi’s release unconditionally and allow him to regularize his documentation if they think he is not Zambian. After all, this is a talent you want to build rather than destroy.

READ BELOW A WRITE UP BY SENIOR JOURNALIST MABVUTO PHIRI WHO SHARES HIS PAIN FOR MUMBA YACHI’S PREDICAMENT FROM A FATHER’S POINT OF VIEW. BOMA IYANGANEPO TAPAPATA!!!!

I am currently in tears, as l write this because of one person, Mumba Yachi. I might not have known the musician personally but l have had a connection with his music several times.

Why am l crying? His interview outside court after today’s [yesterday] court appearance to the journalists is heart breaking and too heavy to digest or comprehend. The feeling and reality of knowing that you are ‘stateless’ in two countries simply put no proper documentation to back your claim that you are a citizen of one of the countries.

The court has delayed to give him bail until he gets a temporal permit to stay within the boundaries of Zambia, the question is where will he get the documentation to validate his Congolese nationality? How can such a talented young man be stateless? is he being a victim of his talent?

What will he tell prospective generations about the imaginary boundaries that the Europeans created to separate our people? It is seven days without seeing his daughter because the walls of prison has dictated so. I being a father like him, it is painful: the absence of family is one of the worst experiences considering bonds that we create especially with a girl child.

I feel your pain away from our beloved ones. My earnest appeal is to the leadership of the country to cherish and embrace Mumba Yachi, as our own brother making a difference in a society littered with scandals such as sex parties.

Admittedly, he might have been wrong in his presentation of documents to law enforcement agencies but it is time to look beyond his citizenship and focus on his contribution. What if he used the same documents to vote in previous elections for his preferred candidates? Will we still treat him the same?

This could be an opportunity for Zambia to consolidate a constitutional provision that provides for dual citizenship and fully integrate him into our society.

I am optimistic that soon the son of the soil will walk to freedom and sing proud and free like an noble eagle. Mumba Yachi is noble and society should be just to him.

Mumba Yachi you are not stateless but a statesman, a noble one for that matter. Thoughts of my father….

ZRA Workers Aid Lusaka City Market

Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has made the biggest donation of K276, 872 towards the reconstruction of the Lusaka City Market project.

Republican Vice-President Inonge Wina received the donation on behalf of the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) and the committee tasked to spear head the project.

Wina commended ZRA for the donation which she described as having come from the hearts of the Board Members, Management and staff since the money came from their personal contributions and not the official coffers.

She added that there was need to complete the project before the rain season and called on the private sector and the Zambian community to support the project and enable quick completion of the market.

The Vice-President urged the Authority to collect more taxes from the informal sector including from the marketeers once the market was completed.

And Speaking when she presented the cheque, ZRA Board Chairperson Chileshe Kapwepwe stated that apart from the humanitarian aspect, the Authority was aware that the traders and marketers are taxpayers who contribute their hard earned income to national development.

Kapwepwe said the loss of business presents a lost opportunity for trade and income generation and ultimately a loss of potential tax collection.

PF Launch Smear Campaign Against Kambwili

The ruling Patriotic Front has seemingly moved into a smear campaign to denigrate one of its founder member Chishimba Kambwili.

Kambwili, who was expelled from the party but is surviving on a court injunction, had recently declared a punch for punch battle with President Edgar Lungu.

Yesterday, the PF media team published allegations that Kambwili was arrested for stealing laptops.

The narrative however seems to suggest the Roan MP who has found new friends in the opposition UPND fell in the trap of mistaken identity if the ruling party version is to be given some attention of truth.

READ BELOW THE PF NARRATION OF KAMBWILI’S ARREST

*The Day Chishimba Kambwili was caught in South Africa suspected of stealing laptops*

“See picture of police mugshot of the suspect”

It was in 2014, and Minister of Youth And Sport Hon. Chishimba Kambwili was having a cup of coffee in a restaurant in FourWays in Johannesburg.

An anti-theft and anti-robbery specialized unit swooped on the area and sealed it!

They ordered the criminal suspect , a burly figure in short sleeves shirt and shorts, down!
He was pinned with a gun to his head!

” I am a Cabinet Minister in Zambia, I am a Minister Mwebantu!” He screamed

The Police unit would hear none of it! They hit him to shut him up!

They picked their suspect, shoved him , cuffed him and bundled him in a police van and locked him up at the back.

He was driven to the Four Ways Police Station in Johannesburg.

Where he was for the next five hours until officials from the Zambia’s High Commission to South Africa came to bail him out.

A white shop owner swore upon his mother, that the suspect now identified as Chishimba Kambwili from Zambia, was the same thief and burglar that had stolen his laptops and the CCTV camera footage he surrendered to the Police could prove it! The complainant insisted!

The footage showed an almost identical burly figure to Kambwili, breaking in the heavily secured shops and stealing the laptops

The Zambian Embassy pleaded immunity for the Cabinet Minister and he was later released after a five-hour ordeal!

Embassy officials persuaded officers that this was a serious case of mistaken identity!

Or was it?

Embassy records show the case number, case record with details of complainant, footage and immunity pleaded!

They say; “don’t throw stones when you live in a glass house”!

The Chinese say; “don’t walk naked when you live in a glass house”!

According to a circular addressed to affiliates and signed by FAZ by general secretary Ponga Liwewe, the Appeals Committee is expected to hold its first sitting soon.

“This serves to advise all clubs that following the successful migration from the old to the new FAZ constitution and the near conclusion of the transitory phase, a new appeals committee has been appointed.

“The committee will be sitting immediately to clear all outstanding cases,” the statement reads in part.

FAZ did however not indicate whether the trio had been subjected to an integrity check by either the Audit and Compliance Committee or the Ethics Committee as stipulated in article 58 (3) of the revised constitution.

Mumba Yachi – A Victim Of The Lenshina Ghost?

Former presidential spokesperson Dickson Jere has laid the possibilities of incarcerated popular musician Mumba Yachi.

Yachi has been in prison from August 28 for unlawful stay in Zambia and giving false information in a material particular contrary to section 13 (1) of the National Registration Act cap 126 of the laws of Zambia.

He is also charged with making false representation for purposes of obtaining a passport.

The matter has been adjourned to 18th September for mention and 22 October for the commencement of trial with the accused remaining in custody.

BELOW IS JERE’S INSIGHTFUL SCENARIO OF PERMUTATIONS:

By Dickson Jere

I am an ardent fan of Mumba Yachi’s music and have all his albums. His Afro-beat is clearly in his own class and league only comparable to the likes of the legend Fela Kuti.

Not until his recent incarceration, I never thought he had issues with his citizenship. But what struck me was his passion and well-informed lyrics on the now infamous “Lumpa Church” or “Ba Lenshina” and the connection to Mokambo in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo. So, his predicament made me go on a soul-searching through various literature in order to understand this Lenshina stuff, whose history remains buried and told in a bias way. We grew up to believe that the Lenshina followers drunk urine and believed they had a passport to heaven. They were evil doers.

However, yesterday, as part of the literary week, I stumbled on an interesting book titled “A Time to Mourn” that provides a good and unbiased read on this obscure history of Alice Lenshina. Authored by John Hudson, a former District Commissioner of Isoka, the book is an eye witness’ personal account of the 1964 Lumpa Church Revolt in Zambia. It gives his personal experiences of the Rise and Fall of Alice Lenshina Mulenga who formed the Lumpa church in Chinsali even though it spread to other parts of the country. The book is descriptive and for all intend and purposes, what transpired to the Lumpa followers could be best described as “genocide”. The author places the blame on the authorities at that time who mishandled the conflict between the Lumpa Church and UNIP supporters which led to thousands of people to be massacred in cold-blood.

Official statistics show that the Lumpa church had the biggest following than any other church in Chinsali, Kasama, Mpika, Isoka and Lundazi and their biggest crime was to refuse to join UNIP or participate in politics at crucial time of independence struggle.

And so, the long and the short of it is that the Lumpa supporters were attacked, raped, maimed and made to surrender including their leader Alice Lenshina. But a group of faithfuls refused to submit to UNIP’s threats and consequently fled to the neighboring Zaire now DRC where they established themselves especially in Mokambo in Lubumbashi on the border with Mufulira.
Hudson writes: “in all, nineteen thousand Lumpas went to the Congo between 1964 and 1968. Efforts were made to induce them to return after an amnesty declared in 1968 but only three thousand did so.”

I am told that among those who fled and refused to return was Mumba Yachi’s grandmother hence his birth and upbringing in Mokambo, a border town which features prominently in his songs. And he sings proudly about it!

So the Lenshina migration is believed to be the first known, after Zambia’s independence, where Zambians fled their country to seek refuge elsewhere.
“It was estimated in 1993 that there were up to fifteen thousand followers of the church in the Congo. Up to September 1994, only one thousand, six hundred had arrived in Zambia,” Hudson writes.

“The majority remained in the Congo; if they see that those who have come back do not encounter any hostility, more can be expected to return,” Hudson writes on page 63 of his Book.

How then do you treat these Zambians and their offsprings?

That’s a question!

I end here!

Opposition UPND president Hakainde Hichilema has moved to galvanize his supporters ahead of the week that will see by-elections in some local government slots.

Hichilema has appealed for peaceful campaigns but also drew some political capital from his recent incarceration.

BELOW IS HIS FULL POSTING:

Good evening friends,

As we begin a new week, we would like to wish you God’s blessings in all the activities you will be involved in.

In the same line, we wish to use this opportunity to encourage our members across the country in areas where there are by -elections to campaign responsibly even amidst violent provocation from the opponent.

We are aware that some of you are being maimed and attacked during campaigns, but we ask you not to pay back with violence because if you do so, then innocent people will not see the difference between us and those violent people.

Lastly, please as you campaign, tell everyone that our party President, HH harbors no hate even after 127 days of him being in jail for no reason.

Pleasant week and blessed night all.
HH
