OPINION: Sampa’s ‘Coming Back Home’

$
0
0

Miles Sampa was back from his political wanderings on Thursday and was welcomed back into the Patriotic Front family by secretary general Davies Mwila. Sampa reminded everyone of how remorseful he was having broken ranks with the Patriotic Front.

All was well as he kissed and made up with the Patriotic Front at the secretariat. Nothing wrong with Sampa going miles into wanting to be welcomed back into the PF. Sampa is not a poor man and can by no means fail to survive outside politics. He has also adequate university education to easily find a job and live happily ever after if he wanted.

But why was it so important for Sampa to want to be back in the PF family? Not so long ago he was all over the country telling everyone how bad the PF was and why they so desperately needed to be kicked out of power? Did we not almost believe him? How is the public expected to treat Sampa? Is it how desperately our politics have become that the only politics one can enjoy are ruling party politics?

How can a not so hungry, fairly educated and perhaps handsome young man be so lost in politics? Where does it leave young aspiring politicians that are looking to a new brand of politics? Surely are we to embrace the RB apt description of “Yamunyokola njala”.

Maybe we should be wary of the shed of politicians that are today running around telling us how bad the PF is when they were just yesterday its fiercest defenders.

Speech Analyst: What Really Transpired At 5fm?

Different versions of what happened at 5fm when suspected Patriotic Front cadres launched an attack on opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) officials led by Mwenya Musenge have been told.

Journalist Max Sichula who writes on Social Media as the Speech Analyst shares his experience having been caught up in the thick of things. The PF have denied it was their members on the attack.

READ BELOW

KENNEDY Kambas TOO MUCH
=======================

When we say politicians don’t mean what they say, at times people begin to create conclusions of their own understanding. This is what we mean.

Today, Mr. Kennedy Kamba, the Patriotic front Lusaka province youth chairman, out of pressure and embarrassment of what their unruly cadres did at 5FM Radio on Thursday this week, he issues a very uncoordinated statement.

We say pressure because those cadres who thrown stones at 5FM Radio Station had an express directive to do that and they managed to disrupt the program.

What Mr. Kamba doesn’t know is that there is evidence to that effect which he is not aware of.

Our team picked this sentence below…. Take a read…

Mr. Kamba said “We know that Chishimba Kambwili and Mwenya Musenge’s party the NDC, they have continued to insult or demean the office of the President. And that is very provocative. They are saying we destroyed NDC vehicles, that is a blue lie!”

When the cadres stormed Interchem Buildings, I had just reached the main entrance to the Station, where I saw a group of about 15 cadres some with PF branded regalia charging towards the main entrance armed with stones.

I was one of the persons who closed the grill gate which was stoned more than three times. That was when the cadres vented their anger on four vehicles parked in the premises.

So when Mr. Kamba, says the vehicles were not damaged, we don’t only get surprised but we lose trust in him as a youth Leader.

Sometimes it is honourable to say sorry than trying to justify a wrong caused by members of your party whether they are sympathizers or not.

See below a damaged vehicle belonging to Mr. Musenge, the former Copper belt province Minister.

Mr. Kamba says the people who attacked NDC officials at 5FM Radio on Thursday are not PF members but just party sympathisers.

In a democracy, people should not be attacked or worse still intimidated for speaking strongly against those in Leadership.

Our Team is reliably informed that the attack on 5FM Radio did not go down well with Senior members of the ruling party. They big wigs are disappointed that it was happening when visitors are in Zambia.

In case you are not aware, Commonwealth Special Envoy Professor Ibrahim Gambari, is in town and if you recall, issues to do with victimization of the media is a big agenda of the dialogue process underway.

Political players have over and above complained of intimidation from the ruling party and that incident at 5FM was another free evidence to the Commonwealth team to take home.

If you ask our Team about the PF, it is a violent political party that is scared to afraid of their opponents, in fact they create giants out of anything that stands in front of them.

Even if Mr. Kamba says he is not a violent person, it doesn’t mean he cannot issue violent directives to those under his charge.

Imboela Exposes UPND Tonga Tribalism

$

Former UPND aspiring Kafue Member of Parliament Saboi Imboela says the tribal stigma in the opposition political party has forced her to jump out.

Imboela was overlooked for candidacy with the party opting for educationist Mirriam Chonya in the 2016 general elections.

The former music sensation better known from her days at the heart of a group dubbed Shatel has blown up after an attempt by rabid UPND cadre Larry Mweetwa to dress her down.

Imboela has opened up on what she alleges is the UPND Tonga tribalism that is at the heart of the party structure.

Imboela has since joined Chishimba Kambwili’s National Democratic Congress.

BELOW IS HER FULL POSTING:

I have seen a post by Larry L Mweetwa and let me say that I have been principled enough to have never said anything bad about UPND- and i don’t intend to. UPND has/ had been the only party i had ever known and loved and even when I started to have more enemies inside than outside i still held on.

People will love you until they begin to see you as a competitor then you begin to have enemies that you don’t even know about. Let me mention to Larry that I have resisted to say anything bad about UPND because all parties have problems and better to sort out things internally than air out dirty laundry in public. So people like Larry should not force me to speak all the things that I feel are wrong in UPND because I can.

All I can advise my dear comrade is that he is Tonga and UPND is his ‘birthright’ so let him stick there because he has the right surname to excel in UPND. For some of us that have to be checked by the name you carry instead of skill, ability and even qualification, have a choice to leave and be wherever we want. When you are a mere member you are okay and loved because you are a voter and adding to the votes, but aspire for anything then you will understand that you are not ‘equal citizens’ in the party and others will always have a tribal advantage due to the way the party is structured. So you have to accept being in UPND as merely a person escorting others to fulfill their God knows what plan, while yours should never even be talked about.

Until UPND goes for a Convention and cleans out a few people that feel that the party is theirs by virtue of their tribe it will continue to lose people that are genuinely talented and want the best for the party…. and this is a General post and dare me to publish all names of most party structures even in Lusaka or Kafue and u will see what i mean. No chance for reason when u prioritise tribal affiliation to quality… Even Larry yourself, I have never ever argued with u BUT how u shifted when tribe was at play only God knows.

People that accuse UPND of being tribal actaully have no idea just how bad that is and for some of us that have been UPND almost all our lives and hoping that things wil change one day and don’t ever change can actually shade good light on that which can even make the party be seen for what it really is.. So please leave me alone my brother, you have your life and i have mine to live… I am a free and focused person and i will not let small boys get me in a war that will get many injured because I can get there if u want me to.

Some of us even went to school to do Political Science so that we learn how to govern our parties and countries properly. I never went to school with a vision of ending up as a carder in some party that wil appreciate you only if ‘the clique’ decide that u r worth appreciating…

We have different paths and reasons for following them, so let’s stick to that… Maybe one day I will come back to UPND if I change my name to Saboi Himboela.

The Kitwe City Council has raised about K233, 000 from donations towards the Pave Kitwe Walkways Project, an initiative started by Kitwe Mayor Christopher Kang’ombe aimed at beautifying the city.

Kang’ombe disclosed that amount raised when a Company Sherwood Greene donated K 2, 200 towards the Pave Kitwe walkways project.

He said with the overwhelming response received from the general public, the council was now considering to extend the project to different communities in the district.

Kang’ombe said the council has targeted to pave over 400km in the Central Business District in 2018 and has set plans of procuring paving machines for easy implementation of the project.

“This is money that has come through from corporate donors and individuals. The scope now indicates that we need to do 400km of pavers, instead of just the CBD. We have not used any of the money we have collected since August, the money is still in the account,” he said.

Kang’ombe said once the equipment is procured, councillors will now be empowered with resources to employ local people and help in the manufacturing of pavers in their respective wards.

Porous CBU System Worries Prof. Ngoma

Unknown individuals have been sitting for tests at the Copperbelt University without being registered with the University, Vice Professor Naison Ngoma has disclosed.

And Professor Ngoma says it is rude for students young enough to be his grandchildren to address him by his first name.

Addressing at Copperbelt University students, Prof. Ngoma revealed that the University was so porous such that individuals from outside were managing to sit for tests yet not registered with the University.

He said despite that, such individuals are not anyway students of the Copperbelt University should not think they will manage to sit for final examinations.

“Some of the individuals have not registered with the University but have taken advantage because the institution is porous and are sitting for tests, you will not go away with it, if you are not registered then you are not a student here.

“We will strength systems here and those of you that appealed after being left out of the bursaries and not yet admitted please keep waiting because your appeals are still pending, that in itself doesn’t make you a student here until you are registered, your coming here gives us an indication that you are ready to pay for yourself,” he added.

He further cautioned students against being disrespectful to people old enough to be their parents.

“I don’t appreciate it a young man fit to be my grandson calling me by my first name. That is rude and will not be allowed here, you must be mature students,” he said.

PF Cadres In Kitwe Illegally Feasting On Land

A group of suspected Patriotic Front cadres have gone on rampage illegally allocating themselves pieces of land in Kitwe’s Twatasha Township.

The group of unscrupulous individuals are claiming to have supported the ruling party but have not benefited in anyway yet others are.

“For us we just want to benefit as well before it is too late. If you check this land it is not owned by anyone. We have been to the council no help is coming through. we have engaged the area councillor, he is also not helping,” one of the cadres complained.

“These councillors have been sharing land and no one is following them around so what is wrong with us doing the same? If the council was effective we wouldn’t be here.”

However, area councillor Michael Mbulo is amazed at what was going in his ward.

He said investigative wings have been engaged to bring to book all the individuals involved.

“People should not take the law in their hands. Having campaigned for the ruling party doesn’t give one powers to start allocating land to themselves. That is wrong procedure must be followed.

“We know them they think they campaigned more than others but we will show them that we don’t tolerate lawlessness especially were illegalities are concerned,” he said.

NDC Warn PF: “We’ll Respond With Violence”

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) party in Kitwe has warned the Patriotic Front not to take them for granted because they can also retaliate.

District chairman Steven Chewe said the behaviour of PF cadres was unbecoming and warned that NDC will not sit idle and watch them continue attacking their leaders.

He said the NDC has been very peaceful but the trend of them being attacked whenever they had a meeting was becoming unbearable and will not be allowed to continue.

“We are a very peaceful party, but what the PF is doing is not good. It’s like every time we have an event they will come to attack us. I think we will not allow this we may be forced to retaliate if this continues,” Chewe said.

Chewe was commenting on the attacks by suspected PF cadres on NDC Secretary General Mwenya Musenge and spokesperson Eric Chanda.

“I think we would like to urge the National youth chairman Honourable Steven Kampyongo to tame these PF cadres and condemn their barbaric acts. If not, we will conclude that they are in support of such behaviours,” he said.

Chewe said police should bring to book all individuals that attacked the NDC leaders at 5fm in Lusaka.

“If you check the place where that incident happened, it is just near the police headquarters, so we expect them to do a professional job on this matter,” said Chewe.

Letter: Larry Mweetwa Is A Danger To UPND

Hello Dr Larry and all my fellow UPND members!

Allow me to urge my Dear brother Larry Mweetwa to please, and please stop public attacks on our Dear sister Saboi Imboela who has exercised her democratic right by leaving The Mighty UPND to join the newly formed NDC because I foresee fire on the mountain should Saboi respond more than she has so far responded.

Remember sister Saboi in 2016 wanted to contest as Kafue MP on UPND ticket but due to some …….. anyway, I will not go beyond that, she was not adopted as we as a party favoured madam Mirriam C Choonya (thank God she won and is doing commendable works for the people of Kafue so far).

Let us all remain united and learn to accept and respect other people’s decisions!!

All we should just do now is to wish her well in her endeavours….

I love my brother Larry, I love my sister Saboi, I love the Mighty UPND and I love all of you.

Yours Honourable Bruce B Bwalya.

EDITOR’S NOTE:

The more the UPND tolerate intolerant characters like Larry Mweetwa the more they grow distant from the people. Some individuals best serve the party in the background where their toxic behaviour can be controlled.

Zambia Police Hires 8 Chinese Nationals As Reservists

Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja has hired 8 Chinese nationals as police reservists giving Zambians a surprise Christmas present.

Lusaka lawyer Dickson Jere is among the many left baffled and are asking questions.

JERE WRITES

On January 11th this year, Zambia made international news when it was reported that the Inspector General of the Police had banned his officers from marrying foreigners. The decision was justified as a security measure and the BBC went to town with that story…..

12 months down the road, the same Inspector General is reported to have commissioned some Chinese (eight of them) as Police Reservists to infiltrate the same agency we stopped our brothers and sisters from having spouses who are not Zambians.

Our Chinese brothers have taken over our land, taken over our Mukula trees, taken over our road contracts and now are taking over our police…eish…imagine being arrested by a China Man in your own country !

Anyway, let me take a chill pill since I am on Christmas break and supposed to be enjoying my holidays…

Jere Turns The Heat On Police For Recruitment Of Chinese As Policemen

Former State House press aide Dickson Jere has raised issue with Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja’s decision to commission some Chinese nationals as police reservists.

The police spokesperson has mumbled some half-hearted explanation that Jere is having none of.

Jere has backed up his argument by tearing to pieces Esther Katongo’s misinformed defence of the recruitment of Chinese nationals in the service.

Jere, a veteran journalist turned lawyer was special assistant to fourth Republican President Rupiah Banda.

Dickson Jere Responds to Police

I am back again with my arguments against the Chinese joining our police service as reservists.

The PR lady of the police argues that The Zambia Police Reserve Act, Chapter 117 of the Laws of Zambia, allows foreigners to be part of the police reservists and does not discriminate. By the way, this is the colonial legislation of 1950!

Now here is the killer:
Our own constitution (as amended in 2016) in Article 194(a) clearly states that any Zambian who has dual citizenship cannot join the Defence Force and Security Services, which includes Zambia Police Service.

So you stop you own citizens from joining the police because they have dual citizenship and yet you allow Chinese who have no links whatsoever to this soil to be part of the same police service….food for thought.

Again, our Article 190(1)(a) defines the principles that governs the Defence and Security Services in Zambia and one of them is to be “nationalistic and patriotic…” . So how does a Chinese fit in this equation? Can they be nationalistic and patriotic to Zambia?

And finally, the Police PR says Zambians serving in the police service cannot marry a foreigner because the Standing Orders says so…ha! What is worse between a Zambian serving in our own police force or the Chinese?

Mind you the biggest scam that government has been grappling with the stolen Mukala trees which predominantly being traded by the same Chinese… need I say more?

Lubinda Tells Off UPND Over Petition Claims

Justice Minister Given Lubinda says there is no presidential petition under any court in Zambia.

Lubinda seemed to have digging at the opposition United Party for National Development’s never ending funeral about the allegedly stolen results from the 2016 general elections.

The Kabwata lawmaker said that the presidential petition went out the window the moment the Constitutional Court dismissed it for having exhausted the 14 day window within which it must have been heard.

Lubinda said the matter was now buried and citizens were free to comment about it.

And Lubinda said the judgement on the ministers remaining in office after parliament was dissolved has been served on government.

He said that executing it may be difficult as the former ministers that stayed in office after parliament was dissolved had rendered a service to the country.

The Constitutional Court ordered that ministers that remained in office after the dissolution of parliament to repay the money spent but there has been no implementation of the ruling.

About 12 students from the Copperbelt University were treated for injuries after being beaten by police officers during riots that recently broke out at the campus over delayed meal allowances, the Human Rights Commission has disclosed.

Human Rights Commission spokesperson Mweelwa Muleya has said the commission had carried out investigations and found records of 12 students who were treated at the Kitwe Teaching Hospital and nine at the Copperbelt University Clinic.

He has further disclosed that from the investigations, one student is still being treated for burns on his private parts believed to have caused by teargas canisters with the rest discharged.

“23 students, 21 male and 2 female were apprehended from their rooms by the Zambia police services. They were detained at Riverside Police station and were released the following day upon payment of the admission of guilt fee,” Muleya confirmed.

“However we wish to refute rumours that continue to circulate that a student died during the fracas with the police. We have talked to CBU management lectures and students who have all refuted the claims.”

Muleya has further advised police to stop invading student rooms when trying to bring peace to the campus during protests.

“We also wish to call on students to stop the practice of stoning and verbally abusing police officers assigned to maintain law and order at the campus,” said Muleya.

Quality of New Engineers Worries EIZ

Engineering Institute of Zambia Vice President Eng. Abel Ngandu has charged that the industry is getting a raw deal from graduates coming from different institutions of higher learning.

Eng. Ngandu said it was difficult to incorporate graduates in the industry as most of them have no technical knowledge of different engineering related programs.

He said the current situation has led to the country to continue importing human resource as those trained local need further training before being employed.

“We have a serious problem because some of these graduates can’t do any serious practical work. yOu get them and that means YOU have to start retraining them, which is very unproductive,” he said.

Eng. Ngandu said there was a need for partnership with higher institutions of learning to prepare a cadre of engineers that will add value to the country’s economic growth.

Eng. Ngandu stated that young engineers need to be prepared to a certain level that will enable them to respond to engineering challenges in the industries.

He said with a good cadre of engineers, Zambia will not be importing engineers from China or other countries.

Kanganja Must Resign – NDC Youth Leader

The National Democratic Congress Party (NDC) has demanded the immediate resignation of Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja for alleged unprofessional conduct.

NDC National Youth chairperson Charles Kabwita has charged that the behaviour exhibited by the Inspector General of Police in appointing eight Chinese nationals in the Zambia Police Reserve is an act of gross misconduct.

He said with such behaviour there is no need for the Inspector General of Police to continue holding his position when he has exhibited levels of unprofessionalism.

Kabwita has said it is shocking that Kanganga commissioned the Chinese nationals without putting in mind the danger such a move poses on the country’s security.

“The behaviour by the Inspector General of Police is disappointing and we are demanding that he resigns from his position for his unprofessional conduct” Kabwita said.

He has further condemned Home Affairs Minister Steven Kampyongo for allowing such a move to go on.

Kabwita said the silence from the home affairs Minister is a sign of failure and should be fired.

Kanganja has since rescinded his decision on the appointment of eight Chinese nationals as Zambia police reserve.

Kitwe Mayor Bemoans Poor State Of Toilets

The poor state of toilets and infrastructure in all the bus stations in Kitwe calls for immediate attention, Kitwe Mayor Christopher Kang’ombe has observed.

Kang’ombe has expressed disappointment that the infrastructure has been left to deteriorate to extremely dangerous levels.

He has since put to task Director of Housing to ensure that part of the money being collected in the bus stations is reinvested to improve the state of infrastructure.

Kang’ombe said bus drivers and commuters are currently experiencing challenges because most bus stations have no shelter.

“Obviously it is disappointing that the infrastructure is in such a status, but as a council, we are concerned and wondering how the infrastructure has deteriorated to such levels. I have asked director housing that a portion of what is collected from this station is ploughed back,” he said.

Kang’ombe has asked for patience from the bus drivers for the council to address the issues affecting them.

“Our drivers need to give us some time. We are going to mobilise local resources and see how best we can move in as an immediate measure, but obviously you are aware that there is modern bus terminus coming up next year, the contractor is mobilising resources,” he added.

Most toilets at bus station are in a bad shape and pose as a health hazard to members of the public.

MISA Zambia Upset With Threats At Rural Radio

MISA-Zambia has issued a statement condemning PF cadres issuing threats against Manda’s K-FM in Luapula.

The media body says any amounts of threats at the facility will be recorded as persecution of journalists.

BELOW IS THE FULL STATEMENT

For Immediate Release

Lusaka, 21st December, 2017.

MISA Condemns PF threats to close down K-FM Radio

MISA Zambia condemns, in the strongest terms, threats by the Patriotic Front cadres in Mansa to close down K-FM Radio if the station goes ahead and host Chipili Independent Member of Parliament Hon Jewis Chabi on its radio programme dubbed “Speak your minds Thursday”.

The radio station was scheduled to feature Hon Chabi on a paid up radio programme but unfortunately the PF cadres blocked the entry to the radio station and threatened with violence to close down the radio station.

As MISA Zambia we believe that the PF cadre’s behavior is uncalled for and an infringement on the fundamental freedoms and rights of citizens.

The PF cadres are not the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) mandated by law to carry out oversight functions on conduct of broadcasting houses.

MISA Zambia believes that the threats issued by the PF cadres are a reflection or position of the PF party to close down media houses offering divergent views and information to the public in a democratic setting.

We are further concerned that this incidence is not the first occurrence as we recorded a similar incident on 16th August, 2017 at Muchinga FM Radio in Chinsali District in the Northern province of Zambia, which received threats from some PF cadres after it featured Dr. Chishimba Kamwili on its Red-Carpet program which attracted a lot of attention and participation from the listeners. Subsequently, PF cadres on 14th December 2017, attacked 5FM radio in Lusaka for inviting Dr Chishimba Kambwili to feature on its ‘Burning Issue’ radio programme.

The threats are an affront to the freedom of expression and media freedom and should be condemned by all well-meaning Zambians including the Patriotic Front (PF). We therefore call on the PF and police to bring to book the culprits and not pay a blind eye as it will encourage such acts and may result in self-censorship by the media.

The PF must take immediate action as an expression of its commitment to the ideals of freedom of expression and that of the media which are critical to the well of democracy and ensuring good governance in the country.

Hellen Mwale

The Swedish Government through Swedish International Development Cooperation (SIDA) has donated 25 basic support ambulances worth K13 million the Zambia government.

The ambulances will be used for maternal health, new born child health, adolescent health and nutrition.

Speaking he received the ambulances, Health Minister Dr. Chitalu Chilufya said the donation will go a long way in reducing maternal deaths in Eastern and Southern Provinces where they will be deployed.

Dr. Chitalu says the government, through its strategic plan, is aiming at reducing the rate of maternal deaths in the country, and that the donation of the ambulances will supplement government’s efforts in reducing the rates.

He says he is particularly happy that some of the vehicles will be used in Eastern Province where the country recorded the highest number of maternal deaths.

And speaking he handed over ambulances, Swedish Ambassador to Zambia Henrik Cederin says the ambulances which cost K525, 000 each will be used to save lives in hard reached areas in Southern and Eastern provinces.

Amb. Cederin says lack of transport results in pregnant women dying because they cannot reach the health centers on time.

CBU Worker’s Union Leader On Thin Ice After Snubbing Nkandu Luo

Copperbelt University Academics Union have unearthed a scheme in which management at the University have received instructions to dismiss Union President Derrick Ntalasha for allegedly walking out on Minister of Higher Education Profession Nkandu Luo on Thursday.

Union General Secretary Willy Ngosa has described the schemes as evil saying the unionised lecturers will not be intimated by the scheme.

He said such schemes were not in any way helpful to the government in addressing issues at the troubled Copperbelt University.

“We are also aware that there are evil intentions to dismiss our President, Dr Derrick Ntalasha from the University for speaking the truth and standing up for the plight of staff and students at the University. These schemes are evil because they are based on lies, hatred, and intimidation,” Ngosa said.

Ngosa said unionised lecturers will not be silenced through intimidation by those who don’t mean well for the plight of both staff and students at the institution.

“We want to put it on record. We will not be intimidated by these schemes, if they want to go ahead with their plans, we challenge them to fire all of us because they touch one, they touch all of us,” he stated.

Ngosa has further expressed disappointment that the Minister of Higher education could make allegations that the lectures are the ones inciting students to riot at CBU in addition to allegations they were working with the opposition.

“I think we are disappointed because you can’t expect us to work with the opposition. In which way? Its government that runs these institutions, what will the opposition offer us? We only speak out against these injustices.

“We have time and again categorically stated that the problems at CBU require a sober analysis and permanent solutions.

“Running away from issues affecting the institution and targeting our energies is not the cause of the problems and will not help government at all,” he said.

On Thursday, Unionised lectures walked out on Professor Nkandu Luo when she addressed them in the presence of Kitwe District Commissioner Binwell Mpundu.
