Home-Affairs-minister-Edgar-Lungu1One of Zambia’s numerous attempts at drafting yet another constitution set off yesterday at the Mulungushi Conference Centre in Lusaka with acting President Edgar Lungu saying the people’s views will be taken on board.

Lungu and Justice minister Wynter Kabimba took the central role assuring the gathering that the process that the country has yet to get right will be conducted transparently.

However, with government already dragging its feet on controversial clauses like the 50% plus one, the presidential running mate clause, the death sentence and appointment of ministers from outside parliament, many will be watching how the heavily funded exercise turns out.

With provincial conferences having made their recommendations on various issues there is a lot to look out for on how the final draft constitution will be crafted.

There is yet to be clarity on whether the process will take the route of a referendum or not.

The deliberations will take place for a week after which a final draft is expected to be handed to the President and the public simultaneously.
