With the Zambia police remaining adamant on denying the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) a permit to hold the Chawama rally, the party has mobilized over 500 youths to provide security at the gathering they insist will go ahead tomorrow.
Lusaka Province Youth chairperson Brian Mizinga said the party had selected 580 youths to maintian order at the rally that will be addressed by party president Hakainde Hichilema.
“As UPND we have assembled about 580 youths that will provide security and order during the rally. As a law abiding party we notified the police and despite what they have said, the rally will go ahead,” Mizinga said.
“The last time we held our meeting the PF attempted to violently disrupt our meeting we are peaceful and will ensure the meeting goes on peacefully.”
The UPND is holding the rally to protest the recent removal of fuel and maize subsidies. The opposition party has made attempts to hold more than 15 rallies since 2011 but President Michael Sata has ordered police not to grant them permits.
Only one rally was held in Lusaka but a Wynter Kabimba (PF Secretary General and justice minister) trained militia disrupted the proceedings when machete, stone and chain welding youths descended on the gathering in what nearly turned into a bloodbath.
