KachasuChief Chiwala of Ndola rural on the Coperbelt Province has taken to task over 20 families in his area for brewing illicit beer popularly known as kachasu.

Chief Chiwala said he was prompted to take action because a lot of marriages have been destroyed because of people brewing and drinking kachasu.

He said the situation has also led to early marriages in places where parents cannot afford to buy beer but they do not have money then end up increasing cases of early child marriages to earn and satisfy their destructive thirst.

However, the affected families who have been summoned by Chief Chiwala over kachasu brewing is the only source of income they have and that the action is unfair.

The affected people said the money realised from brewing kachasu is used to support their children in schools and fend for their families.

“We can’t even find jobs when we go out to look for them and what do you expect us to do? For me, my child was chased out of school and I started brewing kachasu until I raised enough money to pay for his school fees,” a frustrated lady said.

Chief Chiwala intends to hand over the twenty families to law enforcement agencies to face the wrath of the law.
