education_minister_prof_geoffrey_lungwangwaThe Civil Society has continued to press government to rescind its decision to regulate NGOs under the 2009 NGO Act that attempts to clip the role of the civil society.

NGOCC board chairperson Beatrice Grillo said while the civil society were not against regulation, the NGO act was crafted without their consent and would make it impossible for them to operate.

Among the contested areas is the restriction of the source of funding and also screening who makes the board of these organizations.

“We are not aginst regulation but the form in which government wants to do this regulation is highly dictatorial,” Grillo said during a meet the MPs workshops to present their case.

And Nalolo MP Geoffrey Lungwangwa said the PF government was bent on over regulation every aspect of the citizen’s rights.

“What we have seen is a strong shift towards the regulation of everything by the PF government,” he said.
