The Press Association of Zambia has expressed disappointment that the Access to Information Bill has not been tabled in the life of the current parliament nearly two years after the assumed office. President Michael Sata, like on main issues such as the constitution and Barotseland Agreement, promised to table the Access to Information Bill within 90 days of becoming Head of State.
PAZA president Andrew Sakala said over 20 years after the struggle for the Access to Information Bill being made a reality, successive governments had deceived the people on the law.
He said the Patriotic Front government had joined the long list of cheats that had been taking people for granted.
“We are very disappointed that parliament is being adjourned without the Freedom of Information Bill being tabled,” he said.
“This is a battle that has dragged on for years and now we are appealing to the conscious of the political leaders to think about the significance of this law and not themselves.”
The struggle for press freedom has been a long standing battle with government reluctant to effect the law.
