Suspected state agents have created a facebook page for Lusaka-based journalist Chanda Chimba III in a move aimed at implicating the freelancer and also duping his associates into revealing their identities during what should be interactions with him.
Chimba, III who is now the Voice of America correspondent in Zambia, is being portrayed as an active social media contributor where the suspected agents have been giving regular updates on events around the world and uploaded a picture of him.
According to preliminary investigations conducted by Zambia Reports, the page has been active since Friday August 16, 2013.
But when contacted, Chimba says he was first alerted to the scam by his nephew on Saturday August 17, 2013 and was also told by his children.
“I immediately put in measures to have the page removed by contacting Facebook. I do not have any Facebook account and have absolutely no intentions of having one any time soon,” he said.
Chimba also disclosed that lately he has been getting strange emails and sometimes people call him on his mobile then remain silent when he answers. He explains that the last time things like this to happenned was in 2010 and 2011 at the height of his Stand Up For Zambia documentary.
“I am not surprised as this obviously is the work of my enemies who are certainly still not satisfied that am in court on charges related to my documentaries and freedom of expression. It is my prayer that before this thing gets out of hand Facebook may remove the page impersonating me,” Chimba said.
Chimba is coming under coordinated attacks from Patriotic Front cadres who are taking turns profiling him and threatening his life. He is currently being persecuted by President Michael Sata and brought to court on flimsy charges aimed at “finishing him off.”
