The six-year long murder trial of Lusaka businesswoman Beatrice Hangwende and her co-accused ended with the accused sentenced to death for murdering her husband’s lover Chabmoe Enterprises chief executive Monica Chabwera Phiri,
Hangwende owner of Jasman Parlour and her three co-accused persons were sentenced to death on Thursday.
The four were found guilty of murdering Chabmoe Enterprises chief executive officer Monica Chabwera Phiri on April 22, 2007.
The Lusaka High Court sentenced Hang’wende, with her brother John Hangwende, a driver Charles Mwanza, hairdresser Jungwe Magula, Joseph Banda and a businesswoman Mary Moyo.
Beatrice Hangwende, John Hangwende, Charles Mwanza and Joseph Banda were sentenced to death, while Mary Moyo was acquitted on account of insufficient evidence to implicate her.
Jungwe Magula was given a lesser sentence of 15 years with hard labour.The verdict brings to an end one of the most intriguing love story in modern Zambian history.
