Civil society organization Operation Young Vote has written to the acting Chief Justice Lombe Chibesakunda asking her to step down to avoid a humiliating exit forced by court action.

Chibesakunda’s continued stay in office despite the parliamentary select committee overwhelmingly rejecting her suitability on account of being above the age threshold has been a subject of incessant debate.

In a letter dated 27th August, 2013 Operation Young Vote chairperson Guess Nyirenda advised Chibesakunda to step down to save her integrity.

“We as young people are pleading with you to step down with immediate effect and avoid this inevitable tsunami of embarrassment,” Nyirenda said.

He said the Law Association of Zambia had guided everybody on the matter and wondered why Chibesakunda had held on to her position despite timely counsel from LAZ.

“The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ), political parties, civil society organizations and many other stakeholders have spoken. Surely it has taken the LAZ to convene an Extra Ordinary Meeting to once again resolve that you are not qualified to hold the office of the Chief Justice. LAZ has given you one month to move or they would resort to other means,” he said.

“The United Party for National Development is continuously threatening with protests against your continued stay in office.”

LAZ recently resolved during an Extra Ordinary Meeting that they give Chibesakunda one month to vacate her office failure to which they would take the matter to court.
