African Parliamentarians Network Against Corruption chairperson Cornelius Mweetwa says the move to cancel US$210 Safe City CCTV Project that was awarded to ZTE is positive.

Mweetwa said the acknowledgement by Home Affairs Minister Edgar Lungu that the deal reeked of corruption was good albeit belated.

“First we would like to say it was not in doubt that the deal was laced in corruption although government had initially been reluctant to acknowledge that fact but we are happy that they have come out to cancel that deal,” Mweetwa said.

“There was no need to defend corruption but a big plus to the minister and we hope others will also be magnanimous enough to listen to the citizenry.”

The Safe City Project was meant to plant CCTV cameras across the city of Lusaka to keep the city under watch 24 hours.
