Transparency International Zambia has called on President Michael Sata to dismiss convicted Sports Minister Stephen Masumba.
Commenting on the conviction of Masumba for obtaining pecuniary advantage by false pretences, TIZ executive director Goodwell Lungu said Masumba’s conviction was a good warning to serving ministers to desist from corrupt practices.
“We urge President Michael Sata to immediately dismiss the convicted Hon. Steven Masumba from his deputy Ministerial Position,” Lungu said.
“Transparency International Zambia welcomes the conviction of Sports Deputy Minister Hon. Steven Masumba,” he said.
“This we believe sends a good signal in the fight against corruption that even serving Ministers can be brought before the law and made to account. It is very rare in Zambia to have a serving Minister convicted of a criminal offence. “
Lungu said, “We commend the Lusaka Magistrate Courts for dispensing justice without fear or favor.
“We want to strongly advise the Patriotic Front leadership to always lead by example and to be accountable for their actions and remain above board all the time and learn from Masumba’s conviction.”
