The strike by nurses at the University Teaching Hospital has entered day three with the government summoning personnel from the military barracks to take control.
Nurses have gone on strike following their disenchantment with government’s failure to address their demands for improved conditions and also rectifying of disparities in the pay roll after a controversial across the board salary increment for civil servants.
The nurses did not even bother to gather today but only showed up for a meeting with the Zambia National Union of Nurses before vacating the premises.
Only a skeleton staff is operating with government having summoned nurses from the Zambia Air Force and Zambia Army to contain the situation.
The nurses are demanding better conditions and also that disparities noted during last month’s salary increments be rectified to ensure a higher percentage rise.
And Labour Minister Fackson Shamenda, who the nurses have fingered as being at the centre of the strike for failing to honour his word to address their concerns after he asked for time, has urged the workers to go back for week.
Shamenda said the strike is illegal and workers risked being dismissed if they continued with their action.
