President Michael Sata has given the clearest indication that the constitution making process has been a waste of time and resources by saying the current constitution only needs minor amendments.
Zambia has been grappling with constitution change since 1991 with the latest one that has almost reached completion point being thrown in disarray after the Patriotic Front government stalled the process with the demand for only 10 copies to be printed for the president’s own private reading.
The Technical Committee has refused to fall back on their pledge to also release the document to the public.
Featuring on Radio Yangeni in Mansa, President Sata said the overall state of the Zambian constitution was good and called for minor amendments.
President Sata said Justice Minister Wynter Kabimba was correct in ordering the Technical Committee to print only 10 copies.
The Patriotic Front was a staunch advocate of constitution reforms whilst in opposition and even blindly promised to deliver a new constitution within 90 days of being in power.
