First Lady Dr Christine Kaseba-Sata says the strike period for nurses provided good practical training for student nurses.
During the handover of a refurbished children’s ward at the University Teaching Hospital, Dr Kaseba said the nurses that stayed at work during the strike had a heart for the people although it is only nurses on contract that continued working during the 8 day strike.
“I must say that I want to commend the student nurses that were working during the strike. You did a good job. It was also a time to have some practical training,” she said.
“We also want to commend those that were working during the strike because they showed that that they have a heart for the people.”
And Dr. Kaseba has commended Health Hope Zambia for refurbishing the malnutrition ward and also donating an ambulance for operations at the children’s ward.
During the 8 day strike the government was forced to summon nurses from military hospitals and also student nurses to keep the country’s highest referral centre running.
Nurses had been striking demanding a 100% salary increment and also rectifying of disparities in the pay structure.
So far government has fired over 200 nurses after returning for work.
