Mealie meal prices in Mufulira District have gone up by over K5, 000 although the government says it is not bothered as the price increases are within the economic limit.
With the input support programme in chaos and also the marketing season having not gone very well, the mealie meal price and other food commodities is expected to further shoot up.
A 25 kilogramme bag of breakfast mealie meal is fetching K72 while a 10 kilogramme bag selling between K35 and K40.
Vice President Guy Scott recently admitted that the mealie meal prices were on a high because of the removal of subsidies.
“This is because there isn’t a government subsidy, if you like, coming into the market at this point in time but we are keeping an eye on it,” Scott said.
