The Southern African Centre for Constructive Resolution says there should be no looking back by Zambians in their demand for a new constitution.
SACCORD Executive Director Boniface Chembe said there was universal consensus among Zambians that the current constitution was faulty and that is why there had been several constitution review commissions.
Chembe said there was no need for President Michael Sata to pretend that the new constitution was okay when he dedicated most of his campaign messages on delivering a new constitution.
“Our understanding is that there has been general agreement among Zambians that the current constitution is not perfect that is why there have been so many constitution review commissions,” he said.
“The Zambians have made their recommendations and President Michael Sata acknowledged that need by constituting a technical committee to help expedite that process. There is no need to play clever and deny the people a new constitution that he promised whilst campaigning for power.”
President Sata has made a turnaround on the constitution by claiming that Zambia does not need a new constitution as the current one is adequate.
