Police brutalityChief government spokesperson Joseph Katema has warned that government will crush any demonstration over the constitution if the grand coalition does not adhere strictly to the demands of the Public Order Act.

Katema said the civil society will be crushed if they defy the Zambia Police or any law enforcement agencies.

The grand coalition on the constitution on Friday announced that it will hold nationwide demonstrations to push government into delivering a people driven constitution that the PF government refused to deliver despite having set it as one of their key campaign promises.

Last Tuesday, the PF government MPs voted against a motion to compel government to deliver a roadmap and expedite the process.

The vote that was in favour of the ruling party by a 69-42 margin shut the lid on any realistic expectations that the PF is interested in delivering the constitution.

“The people who are going to demonstrate should follow the provisions of the Public Order Act otherwise they will be met with the full force of the law,” he said.

President Michael Sata has repeatedly said in the recent past that the constitution is not a priority.
