United Party for National Development, UPND, leader Hakainde Hichilema says he will not stop meeting the people at public meetings despite the police having consistently intimidated him and his party.
Hichilema, who was forced to abandon his 14 day tour of Eastern Province after police unleashed a wave of terror on Mambwe District residents at one of his planned rallies, encouraged other opposition political parties to engage the public despite police brutality.
He advised other political parties not to have fear but face up the police if they had messages to put across to the citizenry.
“I am encouraging other opposition political parties to engage the people kulibe kuyopa (do not fear). If they do have messages for the people of Zambia they should go out there. Do not be intimidated by the police,” he said.
“As UPND we have gone out there meeting the people taking messages on agriculture, health and education. We should fight for these rights to assembly and association under this dictatorship.”
The UPND leader cut short his tour of Eastern Province after his party’s permits were cancelled by the police at the last minute despite being obtained two weeks before.
