Kariba_damMoomba Member of Parliament Vitalis Mooya has demanded for clarity on the state of the Kariba Dam wall that is said to be nearing a state of collapse.

Mooya, who is a civil engineer by profession, said there were conflicting statements from government and the Zambezi River Authority which had left the public in a state of confusion on the correct state.

The Zambezi River Authority has said the wall is in good state while government has admitted that if nothing is done in the next three years the wall that was built in 1958 may collapse plunging most parts of Zambia in total darkness and also the effect of floods sweeping away villages in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi.

“What is the real position on the Kariba wall because it has a lifespan of 140 years and it was built in 1958 meaning it is supposed to go up to 20100,” he said.

“On the other hand we have government saying it will collapse in three years but the Zambezi River Authority says it is okay. What is really the position because we need to set the record straight?”

The spill way gates have stopped automatically closing sending the first signals to the management of the facility it may near its lifespan.
