UPND President Hakainde Hichilema addressing the media flanked by senior officials - 27 03 2014Opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema says President Michael Sata’s description of constitution advocates as yapping was demeaning to the Zambian people.

Addressing a press briefing at the party secretariat this morning, Hichilema said  something was seriously wrong with President Sata.

“He described us as people who are yapping, firstly that is demeaning to the people, secondly it is demeaning to be coming from the Head of State who is the custodian of our constitution,” he said.

“He says there is a constitution, when he was campaigning for elections and he promised a constitution in 90 days, didn’t he know that there was a constitution already in place? When he was opening parliament after he formed government he was still committed to delivering a constitution in 90 days. Didn’t he know there was a constitution?”

He added: “When he set up the Technical Committee on the constitution which has gobbled huge amounts to the tune of k150 billion you mean he did not know that there was a constitution? What is going on with this President? Definitely something is wrong with this President.”

Hichilema has urged Zambians to step up demands for the new constitution as it was the only way the Patriotic Front government would budge.
