The suggestion by the National Restoration Party President Elias Chipimo for an interim Head of State to lead for nine months and oversee the constitution making process has continued to generate debate across the political spectrum.
After a sharp shoot from the government side, opposition political parties have also added their voices with People’s Party president Mike Mulongoti saying it is outside the constitution.
Mulongoti said the route would be costly as after electing a leader for nine months there would be need for another election for the President to lead for the constitutional five years.
He said that it would set a very dangerous precedent where an elected leadership would have to be forced out before their tenure lapsed.
And UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema said Chipimo’s suggestion was just one of the many in a democratic dispensation.
Hichilema said his party’s preference was to mobilize the Zambian people over the constitution.
“In a democracy there are many discussions but we are very clear in our party we think it is better to mobilize the Zambian people,” he said.
“We are working to remove some of the evil policies that PF government has done to the Zambian people.”
Alliance for a Better Zambia Father Frank Bwalya has said the idea is unworkable.
