Vernon MwaangaVeteran politician Vernon Mwaanga says the timing for the demand of the pay increment and gratuity for Members of Parliament is wrong especially coming at a time when there is a wage and recruitment freeze.

Mwaanga said Members of Parliament may have a point but had mistimed their demands as it had created hostility from members of the public who were enduring a wage freeze.

He said that the Zambian civil service was the lowest paid in the sub-region.

“If you look at the sub region there has been a survey which was done that our civil servants are the least paid, attempts have been made to tie their increments to increments that have taken place in the public sector but these are very far away from catching up with what is happening in the sub region,” he said.

“So there is some justification by Members of Parliament but I think it a question of timing because I think the government has imposed not just a wage freeze but also an employment freeze for a period of two years so maybe the timing is what is really an issue in this issue.”

Members of Parliament have come under fire for demanding an increase in their allowances and gratuity.
