123CAN-SunzuSunderland has released Chipolopolo defender Stoppila Sunzu after handing the player a 10-day trial in England.

Sunzu arrived in Lusaka on Monday and is this week scheduled to meet TP Mazembe owner Moise Katumbi. Sunzu has a contract with the D.R Congo side that runs up to 2015.

According to bolazambia, the former Afrisports player was spotted at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport on return from trial and close associates disclosed he was schedule for a meeting in Lubumbashi.

Sunzu will then return to Zambia and later connect to South Africa on Saturday to link up with members of the Chipolopolo to prepare for the March 23 Brazil 2014 World Cup qualifier against Lesotho in Maseru.

The UK Sun reported on Tuesday that Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill assessed Sunzu but a knee injury worry prompted concerns

O’Neill said; “He played a little game the other day, but he had a swollen knee before he came here and he had to come off in the game.

“That will stop him training for a week at most. And then he’ll be going away to play during the international break so we’ll monitor him during that game.

“But I haven’t seen enough of him yet to make a decision on him.”

Reading came close to signing Sunzu in January but pulled out after confusion over his contract status at Mazembe.
